I see a lot of people saying things like "I wish I could draw like that" or "I wish I knew how to do that." I'm not an expert in Photoshop and wouldn't even consider myself advanced. But I would like to get a thread going where people can ask about how to do certain things in Photoshop. You may want to know what each tool does or what certain menu options actually do; things like that.

So if you have any questions, ask away. Hopefully someone in PSOW's large userbase can help you out.

A fairly easy technique to use for CGing involves using layers (on Photoshop... for PaintShop Pro, I dunno). Unfortunately, I don't have my computer with me, so I can't take screenshots, but for each colour you do on the picture, put it on a new layer, and set it on "multiple" mode. This allows colours from different layers to merge... which makes it quite a lot easier, since if the colours are on different layers, making corrections should be easier. o_O

So, in effect, the layers should be set like this.

background layer (unchangable) - the line drawing.

layer 1 - could be the first skin shade... up to you.

layer 2 - another set of skin shade.

And so on. Remember, you can label the layers to make it even more easier. o_O The number of layers you can make is up to you (and RAM, and amount of space, as well as processing power). ^_^

Perhaps Pixel can share some secrets on illustrator... o_O

Uhm, Illustrator isn't my best program, but if anyone has questions about it, I'll try to answer.

Over the holiday weekend, I'll try to do a step-by-step tutorial with pics for a basic signature. It'll probably have an emphasis on layer masks and quick masks.

Here is my tutorial for how to cutout pictures in Photoshop. The next tutorial will be on how to change colors of hair, costumes, etc. I compressed the screen caps a lot to help out the 56k users we have here. If you have any questions, please ask, and I will answer as best I can. I hope this tutorial helps.

I looked through the sig thread and saw all kinds of requests for someone to make sig with a specific character and a specific costume color and a specific hair color. Well, here's how to do it.

First off, you'll need a picture for a background and a picture of your character. The background I'm using is here (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/ragol-explosion.jpg). And the character picture I'm using is here (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/lineup-chars.jpg).

Next, you need to make a new document (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/screen_caps/new_document.gif) that fits the PSOW sig limits. You'll end up with an empty image (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/screen_caps/new_image.gif) and a background layer (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/screen_caps/new_layers.gif). The background layer is automatically locked, meaning you cannot put any content in it.

Open your background picture, and position it (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/screen_caps/move_ragolexplosion.jpg) so you can see your new image and your picture. With the move tool (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/screen_caps/tool_move.gif), drag the picture (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/screen_caps/move_ragoldocument.jpg) onto your new image. Then do this with your character picture.

It's a good idea to name (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/screen_caps/menu_laverproperties.gif) your layers. This will keep you from mixing up what part is on which layer. You'll get a box that pops up looking like this (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/screen_caps/dialogue_layerproperties.gif).

You'll then want to turn off (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/screen_caps/layer_visibility.gif) the layer your character picture is on, so you can get a better looking position (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/screen_caps/image_ragolmove.jpg) out of your background picture by using the move tool (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/screen_caps/tool_move.gif). When your background is the way you want it, turn on (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/screen_caps/layer_visibility.gif) your character layer and position (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/screen_caps/image_charposition.jpg) it as well.

This step is one of the two more time consuming steps. This step will essentially cutout the character you want to be by itself. In your character layer, you want to add a layer mask (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/screen_caps/layer_mask.gif). A layer mask basically lets you hide areas of a layer. When you're working in a layer mask, your foreground and background (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/screen_caps/tool_fbswitch.jpg) colors switch to black and white. The reason it switches to black and white is because when you're working in a layer mask, whatever gets painted black will be hidden, and whatever gets painted white will be revealed. Having your foreground and background colors set to black and white makes it easier to switch between black and white (hiding and revealing). You can switch between each color by clicking the curved arrows (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/screen_caps/tool_fbswitch.jpg).

For cutting out pictures, I suggest using the paintbrush tool (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/screen_caps/tool_paintbrush.jpg). The paintbrush is better than the pencil tool (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/screen_caps/tool_pencil.gif) because the paintbrush tool gives you a softer edge on your cutout, whereas the pencil tool gives you a rougher, harder edge. You can see the difference here (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/screen_caps/tool_brushvpencil.jpg): paintbrush on the left, pencil on the right.

You'll want to zoom in (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/screen_caps/image_zoom.jpg) on the character you want by itself. This will give you a better view of your edges. You should also turn off (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/screen_caps/layer_visibilitymask.gif) the layer that has your background picture in it and lock it (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/screen_caps/layer_lock.gif). Locking it will keep you from accidently messing it up. Turning off the layer will give you a white background, which makes it easier to see the edges (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/screen_caps/image_outline.jpg) of your character as you cut it out.

After you have cutout the edges, go ahead and remove everything else that's on the character picture that you don't want shown. The last thing you have to do is turn on the layer with your background picture.

Here (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/screen_caps/image_viewmask.jpg) is the final cutout as a JPEG. And here (http://www.pixeldissonance.org/stuff/tutorial/sig.psd) is the actual Photoshop document; it's roughly 5MB (sorry for the size).

Right now I'm just selecting the area I want to copy from the origional image and copy/pasting it. I'm thinking though that it has something to do with the fact that to reduce it down to under 35k I have to use a bmp format.

Does anyone know how to get a tool that lets you use tone instead of colors? Tone like in comic books where they use those repeated dots for shading and such? Because I don't want to go through the process of buying the sheets of tone and cutting it out all nice and neat, I just want to use Photoshop to do it.

Basically, find scans of tone, and then try playing around with using those scans in Photoshop, like turning them into layers, or cloning them with the rubber stamp. Do some Googling, and you could find sites with tones they scanned in pretty easily.

Illustarator and Photoshop are two different programs, for one Photoshop is raster based (Based upon Pixels) and Illustrator is based upon Vector (resizable shapes without losing resilution.) If you want to get complicated you can place a picture of a PSO charater you drew or whatever in Illustrator and use the eyedropper tool to get the exact color and then use the Pen tool and your layers to color in your guy.

One of the best tutorials I've come across for Painter and Photoshop has to be Fainted Sun:

http://homepage3.nifty.com/devilkitten/how2menu_e.html

This guy does CG tutorials that run in New Type magazine. His English tutorials are way out of date, I'd highly recommend nabbing an issue of NewType USA for the CG!

If you think Photoshop is hard, I would highly recommend downgrading. I've been using Photoshop since version 2, back in the days where everything was awefully simple.

3 was rather simple, 4 was like 3 with a tremendous number of new features which help out tremendously, 5 kept the general feel of 3&4 but 6 was a huge change in interface and how even basic features were implimented.

I believe that any pre-Photoshop 6 version is pretty accessible. 3 and 4 may lack in features, but for someone who's just starting out, that's not necissarily a bad thing.

I'm reluctant to send beginners over to Photoshop CE or Elements. They feel a bit too different from Photoshop and for someone who wants to transition over to using the full program, this program probably won't help a whole lot.

I've got to say that Photoshop is alot easier to learn than Painter, which has one incredibly steep curve. Granted, if I really learned and got to know painter, I've seen a lot of the kick ass things you can do with it. Check any of SHINE's work for examples of Painter's power.
