Are Marons mandatory for summoners?
No, but neither is fury stance technically . I recommend having at least 1 or 2 of them. Honestly if you're actually planning on playing Su at least kinda seriously, Rappy, and maybe Melon are the only pets I think would be fine to just ignore entirely, the others all have uses and it's nice to keep them around just in case, even if they aren't your favorite to use.
imo; Maron, Popple, and Aero are the 3 mandatory pets.
just how bad is that rappy pet?
Rappy is supposed to be getting buffed down the line, though. Balance Patch 4, I think.
So it's a balanced pet but worse at everything?
really, didnt read anything about this, curious because I wouldnt mind trying SU again even though its not exactly top tier atm but i kinda want to start off with a Rappy since I have everything else.

Under the section "Late February Balance Adjustments", they list that Torim, Aero, Maron, Redran, and Rappy (most of the core Pets, essentially) are getting buffed, and they're also buffing Pet PA power and range.
Pretty much. It's AoEs are all smaller, weaker, and less PP efficient than Wonda and Popple's. Its burst is harder to aim and control than Torim or Maron's, It's Ranged PA has a long start up, and its approach PA has a terrible range. Both of it's high DPS PAs have long animations that require it to stay still for several seconds, but also don't have much range or AoE, so they whiff easily.
GHNeko's suggestion of Torim, Popple, and Maron is probably better for starting pets.
