True, without a hard drive or sorts, we wont see anything hugely added (like an episode 4-ish addition), however they can still patch for cheats and things.

They generally give pretty good coverage. Their opinions and views are usually equivalent of your average mainstream gamer= Playstation so cool! Nintendo so kiddie and lame! Xbox...??

Play PSO on GC for any amount of time and then you'll see why server side saving is the best step ever for the series.
