Or you could just play a game designed for offline mulitiplayer. Last I checked, a ton of games still support it. I can't think of one time I've ran into this problem on any game I've played.
It seems you'll be okay. This guide is going to be allowed (and sticked even) on the official Sega forums once they confirm there's not risk to character loss/corruption.
