Its actually like any other game, with that just being a big trope everyone harping on, heard it on the Internet and only few brave souls contest it.
Do you beat other games with the first 4 - 7 hour playthrough? Wouldn't you say that was a short terrible game then with not enough to do? Maybe they gave things too quick, and you only got to use them in like one instance instead of having time to use such powers more thoroughly to your hearts content?
Yes, they do force you to repeat the game over. But like other games you know what to do now or a better idea this time around. Like an RPG, you're stronger the second time, which is not always a given along the way, but way overpowered so its just a breeze through with story or replay some parts you liked - given only at the very end. Maybe optional dungeon or etc. This one, nearly every kill is helping you in the end. Might feel a long way getting there, but lot less grind than other games.
With 3 max walking speed, there's more than enough time to get the longer, unlocking endings.
It was a survival mode. With stopping the story anytime, you can have your own free mode without losing health, which was slow enough and plenty of food around anyway - consult a map if needed, or watch for them in the places to remember how to grab food first or quick heal when necessary.
"Semi-casual" drop in and out have fun zombie smashing gameplay, that's what Dead Rising was. If you understood it. And no, the save system wasn't "bad" either. It was for dropping in and out. No "gaming" the game with save-re-save to do things over, sometimes tediously for like one item or something nonsense. Saving everyone was kinda nonsense and wasn't necessary, with some bad AI escort missions - like other games.

From what I've seen of Fable, it just plays itself. Mash X. Can do some freeze time spells, fireballs, or what have you, but been there done that, and always promised gold dolphin revolution. You're old and bearded before you know it, with no time to check out much, but just rush to the end of the game. Despite everything they throw in and want you to check out, nope, next playthrough you can waste time doing that. but unlike Dead Rising, I didn't want to.
The good thing for everyone: everyone ends up buying these two series way too much, so there's always discounted price later, for both games with flaws/potentially flaws. Possibly not Dead Rising 2 this time. Demo was wonky, full Case Zero said to have crap driving controls, but didn't read too many reviews. They also might not have played the first and dealt with it, or it could've gotten worse. New developer and all, trying to be more Western than overcomplicated collect a thon-Japanz.

OP guy.
Get game now, save/get other gift/money Xmas and get Fable 3 later. That "You can get your Xmas gift now, nuh uh and nothing later." really doesn't hold up. But you should eventually look into getting your own games. Responsible for getting the money, then you can be mad if something you put earned money down on, didn't live up to snuff --- so don't look at Fable series, better to have it gifted, "At least I didn't have to buy it - was essentially free."
