maybe it's because of the RROD! *joking*

PS2 was also much more popular than the original xbox as well.
i like PS2 a lot more than xbox because it has tons of rpg back then.
PS3 also has a lot of rpg as well, but most of them are only in Japan. :S

360 can only survive well in America, sadly. i have both PS3 and 360.
i still preferred ps3 more over the 360 though. just my preference. but
yeah, i kind of saw it coming for the 360 in Japan. they just dont like
the xbox much; it's all about playstation over there.

    EDIT: customers loyalty is KEY.

It is said that M$ doesn't make many of the type games they, i.e. Japanese, like.

I also read that Monster Hunter and Gundum games are what made the psp popular in Japan. That and everyone already has a DS.

Or LLOD in their case...I'm sorry.

Seriously though, we all knew this. The topic title should have a period at the end, not a question mark, and I see very little conversation to be had about it. Various elements of Japanese culture and history lend them to vastly different tastes from much of the rest of the world, and the old 'Box doesn't have a lot of content that fits into that niche. This has been the case forever, and it has been discussed into oblivion.

Xbox 360 may be dead in Japan, but Japan is all but dead in the video games industry in general. Also, Japan is not exactly a huge portion of the world for Microsoft to have not conquered for those keeping score, although I can't understand the knight-errant style defending of massive corporations that said score-keepers exhibit.

Xbox never picked ip here at all. When I was on exchange in high school; at any given game store there would be a three rows of PS2 games, a row of gamecube and a small dusty section for xbox. I think only a few people over here bought it for Ninja Gaiden and some of the Tecmo games.

Things haven't changed much. Now, there are about 2 rows of PS3 games, 1.5 rows of wii games and about half a row devoted to xbox360. I think it managed to take root better than the xbox, but the appeal isn't there for japanese buyers. There is a surprisingly strong FPS following starting to pick up here, but most of them play on PC (call of duty).

I think the reason why CoD started to get popular in Japan is because Square-Enix publishes those games there.

Xbox's excel in FPSs when it comes to a comparison each console, and that's something that's heavy in the West. Also, Xbox's are region locked, at least when it comes to NA and JPN, so you'd have to go out of your way to get NA only games or JPN only games, etc, whereas PS3s can play anything.

It doesn't surprise me one bit that it's dead over there. And yes, handhelds are serious business over in the East in general, whereas the very thought if playing a PSP/DS in public is shunned upon over here.

Handhelds have had issues here due to piracy.

They're more popular then consoles in Japan is because they can't fit their giant PS3s in their closet sized apartments.

That's pretty much true. My apartment is 1 meter by 2 meters (one room). And I spend three hours on the the train going back and forth to school everyday. Environment is definitely a factor.
