Actually, hiragana is used for native words, while katakana is used for "loan" words, or words that are borrowed from other languages. Iced coffee for example (aisu kohii... or something like that) would be in katakana.
Hiragana and katakana are sorta like the alphabet, in that there is a symbol for every sound in the Japanese language. Kanji is much more complicated in that it has symbols representing words, and there are thousands of Kanji. Both Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji are seen together in things you read in Japanese, including menus.

Japanese is pretty easy, actually.
The only "hard" part about Japanese is memorizing Kanji.

it'll be useful for translating text on items in the game, all the signs above counters, the elevators, the ARKS logo all use this text+^_^+
i used it to translate the fallowing to read as "ARTIFICIAL REAICT TO KEEP SPECIES" +^_^+ i don't know if Sega misspelled react into reaict, but all Google gave me on reaict was the Russian Engineering Academy+^_^+
