How to party with AI

Hello, I'm currently level 20 and yet I've never figured out how to party with the NPCs. Could someone please tell how to have NPCs join my party?

I'm really struggling with a quest and I can't find anyone else to help me, so I'm resorting to using AI instead.

Anyway, you can invite NPC's and friend partners in the campship, it's the terminal to your left in front of the window. If the name of an NPC is grayed out that means someone already has that NPC in a party, but this only occurs in MPAs.
