Hahaha no, it is the thing that changes which class AC bought extra trees are, ie buying a extra hunter tree and then switching it to a braver tree instead

That ring requires the Sanctum gem.
To increase gem rate, you need to use Quarry Grilled Eel (Quarry Eel, Desert Pepper, Forest Rice) or Quarry Shark Soup (Quarry Shark, Desert Flying Fish*, Tokyo Tai Fish*).

*Not sure if these are their names with the item patch.

To elaborate a bit more, the slots are permanently unlocked once you buy them. Would have been nicer if they were a bit cheaper but it's still worth it.
