Seems like lots of work! I always loved the shoot'm ups with an RPG element where you could upgrade your ship with some cheesy Sci-fi space story. Really enjoyed Tyrian back in the days. Jets 'n Guns was also cool.
Yeah a lot of work, even thought shmups are the easiest games to create. Well, I want to make full game, at least once in my life, especially a shooter, since, like you, I'm a huge fun of the genre. My favorite horizontal one is Blazing Star, and the Shinkigami No Shiro for vertical.

I can already imagen a rival and a villain. Classic boss shipp battles, a mecha boss. Love story. Shipping(pun intented).
