What would happen if you went back in time and killed yourse

a while ago me and some friends somehow got on this subject and I was just watching a tv show that brought it to mind. there were realy only 2 opinions between the 3 or 4 of us. They were:

1)you couldn't because if you did then you would be dead and couldn't go back in time so you wouldn't kill yourself so you would go back in time and kill yourself etc or something like that

2)you would just cease to exist

sorry if thats hard to understand but I'm getting tired and not thinking all that clearly. I've been wondering what responses I'd get if posted something like this here for a while so i'll just see what I get.

Well, if you went back in time there would be a billion things that happen..but what rules are we using?

DBZ rules: where even though you go back in time, your future is still doomed to be killed by angry robots

Normal rules: where what you do is affected by the actual time travel and the events that take place in this mission.(Back to the Future)

Hmm I'm not going to bother with the long version this time around. Basically, there is a theory that says that at the point of interference another timeline branches out and creates a new line. If you went back to your own time it wouldn't change jacks**t, and no paradoxes would form. The branching timeline may be considered equivalent to creating a new dimension. *shrug*
