Did you ever wonder what PSOW looked like back in 2001? Well, I'll be posing some screenshots from late April 2001 today.
Front Page
At this point in time, PSO-World was running its first Fan Art Contest and was asking people to vote for the winners. Also, the release Version 2 loomed on the horizon.
Item Database
Do these items look familiar? They should. We've been hunting them for the last 5 years! Of course, most of the rares from this period looked like standard items. Something else to note is the non-standard weapon-types.
Lavis Cannon
Back in 2001, the Lavis Cannon was the ultimate rare weapon. The only way to earn it was to win an official Sega contest or hack it.
Forum Index
Most of these forums should look rather familiar. The unique things that should jump out at you are the Petition forum and "Moderated By" column. Also, anonymous posting was allowed in certain forums.

The member profile page has evolved over the years, but you can still see many of the basic elements here.
Old Complaints
Three weeks after PSO first came out, people were already complaining about Sephiroth clones. Some things really haven't changed that much at all over the last few years.
