It's illegal because it's a reverse-engineered version of licensed software.
And of course Sega's not going to allow it. 'Hey, I'm just gonna modify your Math assignment a bit and turn it in as my own. Is that okay?'
Not only that, but the presence of that server GUARUNTEES that Sega will want nothing to do with PSO anymore. PSO is no longer a good, viable business decision because it was niche to begin with and now already available for free. Sega will get maybe a few sympathy buys of the product and the whole venture will end in a loss.
They're a business, they can't waste their money on crap like that.
But yeah, they're the bad guy in this. They're the ones that don't give a damn about consumer needs, right? Why don't they just release the source to the people that landed the final blow on their game?
