I know this is old news, and that there are other tutorials out there, but this is from my intro series I made for some friends on basic Photoshop functionality. I hope someone gets something out of it :P

How to accurately select your character in Photoshop:
(After step 2, but before step 3, just hit delete to clear the excess junk; I made this tutorial with the assumption that the people reading it would have that goal in mind, although I could have definitely made it clearer )

It determines how different neighboring colors need to be, to be excluded from the selection.
