I have 8GB of RAM, so 200MB isn't causing an issue, but the software engineer in me (that's actually what I do) finds it sloppy. Aside from my gripes with DRM in general, requiring a 3rd party application that provides no essential functions drives me crazy. If Steam were an additional application that layered community features and messaging, I wouldn't have a problem.
My guess is that the high memory usage was WebKit not releasing memory for whatever reason. After all, the Steam client is basically just a crippled web browser.Chrome threads get a little out of control sometimes too.
