“Dam,” Grants said to himself as he, Umberto, and Ruby looked at the burning city in front of them, “it looks like those foreign invaders got to the city before we did.” “What do we do now?” Ruby asked. “We get off this planet.” Grants answered. “But how?” Umberto asked. Grants pointed into the city, “The city is known for being a hotspot for transportation stops for all forms of travel.” Ruby looked dumbfounded, “So we’re going into a city that’s been obliterated for the small chances of finding a ride off of the planet?” Grants looked down at the red hair girl, “You got any other bright ideas?” Ruby sighed, “Why do I have a bad feeling about this?” Umberto laughed, “You always have a bad feeling about everything.” Ruby turned her attention towards Umberto, “Yea, and that’s why you had that bad stomach ache this morning.” “Can it you two!” yelled Grants, “If you want to live another day then you better stop fooling around and get serious. It doesn’t matter if there is a small chance of finding a ride off of the planet or not, if the chances are small we better take that chance.” “Fine.” Umberto and Ruby said together.
Upon entering the city there was a foul stench. “Uh what the heck is that smell?” Ruby questioned as she cover her nose with her coat. Umberto covered his nose as well, “Smells like a cemetery that just got lit on fire.” “That’s because it is one.” Grants remarked and pointed to the piles of glass shaped figures and objects. “That foul stench is coming from the glassing those invaders did.” “Glassing?” Ruby asked. “It’s an orbital bombardment that fires plasma onto a planet’s surface and burn it,” Grants answered, “ The heat from the attack burns the ground with intense heat from the plasma thus turning just about anything that got caught in the fire into glass. It’s the most common way to invade an unwary planet.” “You have to wonder why they would attack a planet with two races on it.” Umberto questioned. “That’s a good question kid,” Grants remarked, “not once since the attack started did I ever thought of that.” “I’m lost here,” Ruby question, “What exactly do you two mean?” Umberto looked dumbfounded, “Wait you mean that smart head of yours hadn’t figured it out yet?” “No?” Ruby questioned nervously. Grants touched the ground, “What he was trying to say is why attack a planet with little resources. You would think they attack the other planets with more plentiful resources.” Ruby placed her hands on her hips, “Well the planet is 95% land with all of the body of water being man-made. Heck now that you mention it, the planet is just a giant savannah.” Umberto scratched his head, “Okay now things don’t really add up now.” Grants stared down the street, “Nothing has ever added up since the beginning.”
“So what’s the plan now?” Ruby asked, “The city is glassed so I really doubt we will find any means of transportation.” Grants looked back, “We to get to somewhere safe, but I doubt this planet is even safe to be on anymore.” Ruby sighed, “So that means we have to deal with this stench even longer I guess.” Grants looked annoyed, “You can stay back on that cliff and let us ditch you.” Ruby rolled her eyes, “I have a bad feeling about this, but it looks like I have no choice.” Grants slapped the girl, “You always have a choice, no matter what there will always be two or more choices.” Ruby rubbed her cheek, “Was that supposed to be a motivational speech?” Grants slapped her again, “No, I’m just telling you to stop complaining and just deal with the reality that’s been happening.”
“Hey Grants.” Umberto asked. “Yes?” Grants replied. “Just how hot is a glassing bombardment?” Umberto questioned. “That would depend on the ship and a whole of other complicated factors.” Grants answered, “Why you ask?” “I think I know a way off of the planet.” Umber answered back. “Enlighten me.” Grants remarked. “Wait!” Ruby yelled, “You mean……” “Looks like we are on the same page here Ruby,” Umberto interrupted. “You’re talking about the Tectonic right?” Ruby asked. “That’s right,” Umberto answered, “the famous intergalactic transport ship.” “Never heard of that ship before.” Grants remarked. “Well it’s a prototype ship that I read off from one of the files Ruby and her pals hacked into from the military’s science department.” Umberto answered. “Hey!” Ruby complained. “Don’t hey me,” Umber retorted, “you were the one everyone knew as a hacker and with that idiot Brandon around you know he’s going to spill the beans right away. “Enough we the shenanigans already,” Grants yelled, “tell me more about this ship.” Umberto shrugged, “The name is a bit self-explanatory so no doubt it is for space travels.” “And the name being Tectonic comes from the fact that the ship can handle intense heat within tectonic plates.” Ruby continued. “If you knew this all along then why didn’t you tell me sooner?” Grants asked. “Well….you see……..I’m not even sure if the ship is real,” Umberto answered not sounding confident. “It was something I dug into a long time ago,” Ruby replied, “but if my memory serves me correctly there was something it being located at a place coded as Hipparchus, Ptolemy, Theon, and Hypatia. Other than that, I have no clear memory of what I hacked into.” “Let’s go.” Grants answered. “HUH?!” Umberto and Ruby where dumbfounded. Grants got up and dragged the two by their neck collars, “Play with a little bit of your own history and you’ll figure out what that code meant.”
