I say this is what Sega should've done.
Instead of making a whole new game, they
should've just kept PSO and ADDED all the
new stuff in, i.e. the ability to move while
attacking, Photon Arts, beasts, nanoblasts,
SUVs, a new colony ship and ALL that. Because
when it comes down to it, I like PSO better than
PSU, and I'd like the new things in PSU better
if they were IN PSO.
So what else would you have rather seen be done?

when they said the servers were shuting down they said also that if you like you could try PSU, as noticible PSU is not beeing sold like they wanted to, so force people to move to another game.
basicly your idea is pretty good, basicly an expansion pack of some sort
When playing Normal just isn't enough for you.

Probably one of the biggest reasons people didn't jump on PSU was
because it would make all that time spent on PSO a complete waste.
If they would've let you at least transfer you're character or play your
PSU character offline and online, just something, would've made it so
much better. I feel bad for Sega though, they need something to get
them back in the game.

I completely agree. PSO just has so much more charm/atmosphere. I felt that with PSU they were trying to emulate other online games (synthesis, endless grinding) and ultimately that makes PSU less unique. The good thing about PSO was that it was one-of-a-kind, and because of it's simplicity it was a. Incredibly fun and b. Attracted all sorts of people.
What I'm trying to say is, PSO was just so much fun because you could just launch into things. You found rare items. You did quests.
The trouble (for me) with PSU is the things they've added just aren't fun. And even worse, most of them have replaced things that were fun.
Feeding Partner Machinery? Booooooooring.
Mags were great. Three items every set period of time and the later ones (Apsaras) looked genuinely impressive.
But Partner Machinery? Bloody hell. It just takes so much effort to raise the damn things it just isn't fun.
Meseta availability (or lack thereof).
Meseta was ten a penny (excuse the pun) in PSO. I remember once just dropping 9999999 or so meseta just so I could start picking it up again.
Initially, I though the scarce availabilty of meseta in PSU was a good thing - increased replay value or whatnot. But no. It actually seems to have encouraged a 'me! me! me!' mentality among players adding to greediness. Also it equals more grinding. Not fun.
New classes? Wow!
Or indeed, not. PSU seems to have succumbed to what I call Final Fantasy XI syndrome, in which if you're not a certain class or have certain equipment then you're 'gimp' and get booted from the party. Heck, once I remember playing with a Force in PSO who had nothing equipped at all and yet managed to clear through Ultimate Ruins. Good times.
Item synthesis? Great, I get to make my own items!
No, actually you get to fail to make your own items. Where's the fun in having to not only gather several items to make something which would probably have dropped on it's own in PSO (making things much simpler), but to have to gather then several times in case one explodes in your face? That's not fun at all!
Not to mention the odd random quest that just had you doing something completely different seems to have vanished. Rappy's Festival? That beach quest where you typed things to make stuff happen? That one quest where you have to shrink yourself to fit under fences? Or the one where you had to star in a film? Doing 'get from point A to point B' quests gets kind of hideously dull after a while.
And what's happened to the music?! It used to be so atmospheric! Now it's just in your face the whole time. More headache inducing than enjoyable. Although Mizuraki Reserve's music is nice.
Also, the whole grinding for meseta things (as well as mission points) has had a detrimental effect in that some people will only do the most beneficial or rewarding quests and completely ignore all the rest. And they're quite happy to do the same quest hundreds of time in a row. Instead of, y'know, having fun.
In fact, the simplicity of the original PSO would suit Nintendo's recent fun-for-all policy.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again.
Phantasy Star Online DS, dammit.
I didn't mean to turn this into a rant, honestly, and I've nothing against PSU (contrary to all of the above) but this is just how it seems to me. This is all my own opinion and probably doesn't even apply to most people! I seem to be stuck at a state where I play PSU, get disappointed, cancel account, long for old days of PSO (PSO BB is out of the question - barely anyone online/playing PSO on a PC feels wrong), reactivate account, and then the cycle repeats. Still, this is just how I feel.
Sorry for the long post! (Please don't hurt me!)

Hmmm... it's hard to explain.
PSO's music was like 'Oooooh... this is nice. Ahhh... nice and relaxing.' Until you encountered an enemy and it changed to 'Uh-oh! Enemies! You'd better deal with them!'.
But the music in PSU is 'QUICK! GO! GO NOW!! KILL THINGS!!!! OPEN BOXES!! NO TIME! KILL MORE THINGS!!! GO! QUICK!!'.
I should probably point out that I'm not bashing PSU (although it seems like it). I'm just saying that they're catered to different audiences - purposely or not - and unfortunately I don't seem to be among that of PSU's. Which is a shame, because I was damn obsessive compulsive when it came to PSO.
Altogether I must've spent 3000+ hours or something demented on those games

The only thing I like about PSU is the Ukishima (Shikon Islands) music.

Saphion, you hit the nail right on the head.
And pounded it the whole way in all in one shot.

Well Said.
Sega has a history of trying to rush people into doing things they dont want.
Just look at the way they treated their 3rd party developers at the DC launch (losing EA Sports). . . and look at how they gave up on Sega Saturn so soon after its launch to push Dreamcast on everybody . .. and THEN how they gave up on dreamcast!!
I hate Sega. They have so much potential but have no idea how to make their customers happy.
