Alright, so I used to play Phantasy Star Universe a lot 2 years ago, around Christmas time. I quit because all of the people i played with quit. Now I want my new friends to start back up with me, and I am wondering if they changed the game up at all.
-Is there still a monthly fee?
-Any new races?
-Classes?
-Did the humans or elf things get any huge special attacks?
-Anything else?

I like that they re-skinned the levels, and I'm extremely happy that they made a 1 handed weapon class, considering the only melee weapons I used was a single one hander. I will most likely be renewing my account, thanks for the info, I appreciated it very much.

Other than making a post asking about it, you're on the site itself that has a database and tons of other information you can read up on. Psupedia is great as well.

I did the same as you, played from release till a bit after X-mas, but recently came back. When I left there wasn't much in the way of missions, and the games economy took a bit of a hit.
I must say I'm pleasantly surprised at all the new missions, PA's, jobs (types), clothing/parts, multitude of room decors, casino, and so on. The shop search was vastly improved over when I left, JP's were easier to get, meseta drops much improved, the economy on 360 is stable, and PC/PS2 is vastly improved from what I hear.
The story missions impressed me, giving me a feel for some of the offline characters, and general happenings in PSU. The jukebox was another pleasant surprise, as well as the tradable items at the casino.
I also noticed some of the newer animated weapons and line shields (Puyoment Aura, etc..), donation box, trade shop, new room transfer tickets (moatoob, here I come), and other random stuff that wasn't available when I played.
Anyways, I'm starting to ramble. Overall, I'm impressed with PSU, and ST, and glad I decided to give it another try.

I'm in the same boat. I quit around a month or so after the game was released because I was frustrated with how simplistic and time consuming it was. Now that things have changed, I'm considering coming back.
Unfortunately, I'm getting a gameguard error in all japanese text on start up of the game.
