I love the artwork, but the colouring is terrible. Like you say it looks like an 80's girls cartoon. I'm going to attack it with photoshop, see what I can come up with.

Here's my version after 5 minutes playing around in photoshop. I think I could make it look pretty cool, if I spent some time on it.

I wish the in game designs looked a bit more like this.
