Like mentioned, according to the stream, they announced that it will follow an original story.
With that being said, there's no clue if this "original story" will include the NPC's we all adore and love or not. I do hope they put the NPC's in there though, instead of going ahead of themselves and designing new characters.

Finally! a PSO anime. They should take this oportunity to explain the entire story of PSO2 for those who didin't play the game or didn't play the story mode. But if its a whole new spin off story that's cool too.

It's most likely something like the Stage Play plot then.
