Just a bit of a brain fart,but I was thinking...

After you complete Challenge 8,quit the game and save it if you haven't yet.
Complete Challenge 9,get/name your S-Rank.
Give your S-Rank to a trusted friend and let him hold it.
Turn off your Xbox completely,without saving. It should revert back to where it originally was when you saved.
Go and complete C9 again,get another S-Rank,repeat.

Anyone wanna feel like testing this theory?

um...
After you complete C9 you get to choose your wep. It then takes you to the lobby. As soon as you enter a room to give item to a friend it will save as you enter the room. That is how GC works anyways. I think XBox is simlar. You are right that it will not save until you either quit or join another room, but you can not give the item to someone unless you are in a room to do so. This make sense?

I'm pretty sure joining another game doesn't save on the Xbox. I remember when I FSOD'd once and I went down two C-mode ranks. I've tested out the non-saving thing before also when someone leveled up in a game,then he turned off his Xbox. He went down a level when he rejoined. Dunno if this supports my response though.
