I haven't played any previous Phantasy Star games, so I wouldn't know a whole lot about the story around it. If only Phantasy Star was more pushed more here. I would've got it when during the Genesis days. Maybe I'll pick up a PS collection for my Saturn. That's if I can find one. Ok, back to the topic.
I was reminiscing about the days I used to play Shining Force 3. To this day, I've played that more than the 250+hrs of PSO i've played. One of the great appeals Shining Force had was the characters. You were the general of an army, a Shining Force. Each character had their own personalities, which is a huge positive compared to the usually hero/heroine and lady in distress business. In Shining Force 3 scenario 1 (3 scenarios total) alone there were such a variety of different chars. There were humans, centaurs, a centuar archer, dwarfs, archers, a wolf, ninjas, mages, priests, and even a penguin. The other 2 scenarios even had more variety. 2 examples of that, a unicorn and a dragon tamer.
I was thinking how sweet it would be if PSO implemented this variety in chars like Shining Force has. Like I said above, I don't know much about the Phantasy Star storyline. So I wouldn't know if this would actually hurt PS. Meaning if Sonic Team were to add archer/dwarfs/centaurs/ninjas/wolfs/penguins to the game, when there was never any of those types of chars in the PS games to begin with. But I'm not sure. For those who know the PS storyline well, would you think this added variety of chars would be a positive or negative to the series?? I'm sure we could all think of different types of chars that would be nice to add to PSO.
Another thing I loved about Shining Force was the weapons. Sure PSO has like around 100 rares, but when you think about it there could be more variety of weapons (not that I'm complaining about the selection now). Yea, since Shining Force did have more variation in chars, there would be more variation in weapons, such as a claw for the wolf, or a wing for a birdsoldier. But it couldn't hurt to have something like an axe or a mace (not the force mace). Also, the weapons in Shining Force, not just the special ones but also the standard ones, had different shapes to distinguish from one another. It just seems like in PSO, weapons have different names or colors. Yes most special weapons look different and are used differently, but there isn't much difference in the aesthetics of a sword or gigush or gungir. How bout a handgun/lockgun/varista? They generally look the same to me, besides the color, name, and effectiveness.
It might seem like to some I'm not satisfied with the lack of variety compared to Shining Force elements, but actually I am very much satisfied with PSO. I just wanted to share a couple of good ideas, IMO.
---------------
I'm all for a resurrection of the Sega Classic RPGs... like Phantasy Star 5 or Shining Force IV... how bout Panzer Dragoon Saga and Sakura Taisen or Wars.
