Clans are usually made for numerous competitive, social, and personal reasons. I personally stay away from clans whenever I can, as they tend to shy from the more traditional gamer's definition.

I am however glad that they incorperated the team aspect into "Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst", as it is an easier way to meet people like myself without hunting them down one by one. That is the sole reason I created a legit team. It is quite honestly the most fun I have had playing "Phantasy Star Online" in a long time.

Right. *points upwards*

Clans can be usually loosely based, or just something to join out of a certain pride or interest that may appeal to a certain individual. I'm not exactly sure about the PSOW proceedings, but I've seen teams around... TOE, SHOES, etc. It brings around pride- for example, SHOES with their pride in FOnewm and their hip shoes.

Clans in PSO don't really do much to enhance the experience of playing, but on the other hand, I don't think they hurt anything either, with the exception of SSJ. Above anything else, clans organize a group of friends and level-headed people so you'll always have a few people to play with.
