I found out today that in PSOBB (US version) that words in Japanese can also be censored. Racial slurs, as well as vulgar terms for human anatomy become the familiar !@%

I haven't played since the Dreamcast days, but have they been this way on the GCN and XBox versions as well?

Some are censored now yes. Others... well, aren't... And really, is it a bad thing to have racial slurs censored?

Not really a bad thing I guess, just kind of odd that like... a term used for Americans would be censored even though there aren't many Japanese players who are playing, and Americans wouldn't even know what they are saying to begin with.

If they are going to censor stuff in other languages, they should at least do it on the same level. I can say tits all I want in Japanese.

Which also means father. So, in the case of Japanese, it is far harder to censor out everything because of multiple meanings of various words. And the reason for the censoring was simply because they just ported over the censors from PSOBBJP. But like I said, it's not a bad thing to have these words censored. Simply because these words don't affect gameplay or (normal) conversation unlike the infamous non-Japanese censors. If anything I am a bit surprised at this because of the complexity of censoring the Japanese words while trying not to censor out non-vulgar words.

Not to sound like a perv, but add an a to the end of that, and you might just see why it's censored... just my theory

I'm assuming you mean "chichi" 父　when you say that... I was reffering to "chikubi" ちくび　and other ways to reffer to the boob region. "chichi" isn't exactly used when you say "Hey, look at that set of tits!" At least not by any of my friends, heh.

The censors aren't very difficult in the JP. For example:

アメ公　is censored
アメコウ　あめこう　あめ公　are not. It is not very specific.

There are a lot of words that share pronounciations, but not very many are vulgar words. An easy way around that is censor certain kanji combinations which can not be misinterpretted in any way. Easy to get around, yeah, but if you're going to censor Japanese as well, might as well do it at the same level as they've done it to English.

They have censored words like "sex" or "clitoris," but not words like gay, homo, poop, fart, or 'masterbate' (masturbate for those of you with a grasp of English).

If you want to get technical, ok. Several ways of saying penis and vagina in Japanese are also not censored. Some are but some aren't. Like how monkey could feasibly be censored but is not. Slang is too much in any language to censor it all. If ST were to censor all possible offending words, all words would be censored. There are many loopholes yes because there are just as many slang terms.

I think the level of censorship in the JP language is more acceptable than it is in English. Just now realized they censor Japanese now, but I do think they should be as restrictive as English if they are going to do it.

Words like 'butt' 'poop' 'gay' 'sex' etc, all that are censored in English, have rather accepted words in Japanese, but none of them are censored. If this place would allow me to post Japanese I could put them up. :/

ST has managed to censor almost all possible offending words, which has led to many legit words also being censored. But in English only it seems...
