what exactly has to happen for your file to corrupt?
apparently, it isn't always fsod or bsod,so what is it?

One of the biggest reasons is that you shut your game off as it is saving...that happens with every save game...

I already looked there. I read a story here about someone who was fsoded(?) and only lost non-equipped weapons/items and items that were in the bank were safe.
I was wondering the difference in turn of events between a character being corrupted due to fsod and just losing your current items/weapons due to fsod(or maybe it's just random).
I hope you understand what I'm getting at here. The wording is pretty poor.

I have corrupted from using a 3rd party memory card on my GC before...

FSOD only causes corruption when it happens during a save. If it happens in game, you loose your Meseta and unequipped stuff; if it happens in a lobby you only loose your Meseta.

If your game freezes before you enter an online game, you lose all of your meseta. Once you enter a game, you will lose all of your unequipped items if your system freezes. This information applies to GC PSO.

so the only thing you can lose to online hackers is unequipped items and Meseta (not char data)?

You can also lose all of your character data, but only if a proxy user reloads you and freezes you during the reloading process. Since, when you reload, your game starts to save. If you're frozen in mid-save, kiss all your characters goodbye.

There are a lot less proxy users than AR users, though, so you don't really have to worry about that too much.

Im not entirely sure what this was classed as, but when fighting the Sil Dragon in a TTF game, I got disconnected during the opening video. Tried reconnected, and found all my characters corrupt, so be careful.

This was ages ago, so no, my latest characters are fine *crosses fingers*

I believe the game does a save whenever you enter a new area. You may have been disconnected when it was doing that.
