I wouldn't necessarily put it in the same category as Elfen Lied. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is more of a mystery sorta deal. The cutesie stuff is there mostly to throw people off. Much of the show is rather dark though. Violent, yes, but not Elfen Lied violent.
