Earn 10,000 Meseta and keep it on you. When you select your character in Single Player mode the next time the "Dressing Room" option will be available. It costs 10,000 Meseta and allows you to alter your character's basic appearance.
And yes, there are some armors and shields (later in the game) that are "visible" on your character, thus changing his appearance slightly.

. . . Is there a way to increase your storage limit. Im kind of a pack rat and I usually find armor or weapons I can't wear yet and like to keep em and with the my personal inventory at 30 I don't like it to be crowed while in a dungeon. . .

Would storage for an additional 200 items and 999,999 Meseta help?
Near the shops there is a Check Room. Talk to the clerk at the counter to deposit or withdraw items and meseta.

. . . Anyway to trade items from one character to another besides through other "trusted" players. . .

Which version of PSO and/or what system are you on?
If you're on a version that is not online only, then you should be able to simply connect additional controllers and enter Multiplayer Mode to trade items amongst your own characters.
