Just got my PS2 copy and it doesn't mention Extra Mode in the instructions at all. I won't have time to actually play the game till tomorrow evening so can anyone confirm it's still in there?

You have to play single-player "Story Mode" to unlock "Extra Mode".

Extra Mode is unlocked when you get to a certain point in Story Mode.

ProTip: To damage your credibility, simply call any of the Phantasy Star games "massively-multiplayer."

Just beat Story Mode through chapter 4 to find out. You have to finish chapter 4. On the PC, the Extra Mode doesn't even show up as a menu option, until you do that.

One would think the manual would say something brief.

like "play story mode to unlock something Extra!" or something.

but extra mode is self explanatory anyways.

Most game manuals don't tell you about hidden things in the game. Extra Mode, being the hidden feature that it is, should be no exception.

Yeah, I was just a little weirded out that the manual didn't even mention the words "Extra Mode" anywhere (at least as far as I can tell).

Thanks all.

Hidden? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. It's mentioned in every preview I've seen.

And EVERY manual at least hints at hidden stuff especially if it's a completely different game mode.
