In other Sega online gaming news, the company has acquired Three Rings Design, Inc. This formerly independent developer based in San Francisco created the well-known titles Puzzle Pirates and Spiral Knights. Both of these are Java-based MMOs. The developer is currently working on Doctor Who: Worlds in Time. This collaboration with the BBC will be a Flash-based F2P MMORPG. There are very few details on this title, but it is said to be launching in the near future.

More on this announcement can be found over on the Three Rings website or on the SEGA Blog.

Until November 1, there will be a sale on several of Sega's titles on PSN. Here are a few highlights:

    • Phantasy Star Portable 2 is $19.99 (50% off)
    • Valkyria Chronicles II and its DLC is $22.49 (50% off)
    • PlayStation Plus members can get VCII and its DLC for $13.79 (almost 40% off)

For the whole list, see Sega's blog entry.

Update: Now that the sale is over, a few remnants have been left behind. It seems that the Valkyria pack actually had a price drop (aside from the additional Plus discount). It remains at $22.49. PSP2 dropped even further to $14.99.

Sega has been announcing plenty of details for their presence at PAX Prime 2011. To begin, here's a list of various games they'll be showing off:

During PAX, Sega will also be holding a community event! Similar to last year's, here are those details:

    • Who: Open to the public, all ages allowed!
    • Where: GameWorks, 1511 7th Avenue, Seattle, WA
    • When: Saturday, August 27th from 6:00 PM until 12:00 AM
    • Food & Drink: We will have food and non-alcoholic drinks available for everyone. If you are 21 or older and would like to drink alcohol, you will be carded and given a wristband at the door. Alcohol will be served in the bar area only.
    • Game Play: You will receive a card good for 2 hours of free game play from the time you first start playing. You can re-load the card if you wish to keep playing after 2 hours. The card works in all arcade machines in GameWorks. We will not have any demos of games from the show floor at GameWorks.
    • Prizes: We will be raffling off 20 pieces (one per winner) of rare custom-made merchandise. But we’re not going to tell you what it is yet! Trust us though, you want it. (Ed. note: Check them out here.)

In addition, you might just have a chance at meeting up with an awesome lead news writer/official forum moderator. Actually I'm lying...it's just me. If you're going to PAX or are just in the area, I hope to see you there! A badge is not required for the community event, however you may want to line up early. There was quite a large group outside last year.

    Team Sega
    Recent community team photo

With the departure of RubyEclipse (depicted right), Sega is looking to take on a new Assistant Community Manager. Barring the current Community Manger kellie (depicted bottom), much of the team has been made up of Phantasy Star Game Masters both past and present. Clumsyorchid (depicted left) and Edward@Sega (depicted center) comprise the other two current members.

To summarize, the community team is Sega's connection to its fanbase. It handles not only the official forums and blogs, but also communications on various social media sites. They bring information to the fans as well as collect feedback from them. Fans often partake in contests and events held by the group. They're also frequently seen showing off upcoming titles at conventions such as SDCC and PAX.

It should not have to be said, but any future member of this team should be incredibly passionate. Hopefully Sega will be able to find a truly willing and qualified candidate for the position.

SEGA sent emails out this morning notifying customers that it had identified unauthorized entry into its SEGA Pass database. The database, containing account information for SEGA Pass members, is said to have been compromised and the service was subsequently brought offline to protect from further intrusion and allow for investigation of the breach. Information that may have been obtained by the intruders includes email addresses, dates of birth, and encrypted passwords of SEGA pass members. SEGA emphasized in their email to consumers that no personal payment information was compromised, as an external payment provider is used to handle and store these details. Here is the full email sent to SEGA Pass members:

    "Dear _______,

As you may be aware, the SEGA Pass system has been offline since yesterday, Thursday 16 June.

Over the last 24 hours we have identified that unauthorised entry was gained to our SEGA Pass database.

We immediately took the appropriate action to protect our consumers’ data and isolate the location of the breach. We have launched an investigation into the extent of the breach of our public systems.

We have identified that a subset of SEGA Pass members emails addresses, dates of birth and encrypted passwords were obtained. To stress, none of the passwords obtained were stored in plain text.

Please note that no personal payment information was stored by SEGA as we use external payment providers, meaning your payment details were not at risk from this intrusion.

If you use the same login information for other websites and/or services as you do for SEGA Pass, you should change that information immediately.

We have also reset your password and all access to SEGA Pass has been temporarily suspended.

Additionally we recommend you please take extra caution if you should receive suspicious emails that ask for personal or sensitive information.

Therefore please do not attempt to login to SEGA Pass at present, we will communicate when the service becomes available.

We sincerely apologise for this incident and regret any inconvenience caused.

We are contacting all our members with these recommendations.

If you have any further questions please contact SEGA customer support on [email protected]"

Sega now joins companies like Sony and Codemasters in the list of those targeted by recent security breaches. Feel free to drop by the forums to join in on the ongoing discussions regarding this latest incident, or to place your bets on who's next!

You may remember our news post from October detailing information on two recently-discovered Phantasy Star trademarks. Now through various Japanese game news sources, such as Gpara.com and 4Gamer.net, SonicTeam have unveiled one of the two titles.

Phantasy Star Eternal Hunters is a Japan-exclusive mobile game app being hosted through the Japanese service Mobage Town. Categorized as a "region-based" RPG, this game lets players undertake the investigation of an unknown planet where they must carry out a top secret mission gathering data and investigating a ship which had to make an emergency landing on the planet. The application utilizes your phone's GPS capabilities to determine what type of monsters you will encounter, so as you move from area to area across Japan, you will discover new monsters to battle. Furthermore, Eternal Hunters will be linked with the upcoming Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity, letting you obtain exclusive weapons for use in the PSP title.

Eternal Hunters is slated for release on Japanese mobile devices this winter. Pre-registration has begun, and a lucky 30,000 registrants will be selected for an early trial run of the game. Once service of the full game begins, it will be free to play, however you will have the option to purchase items for use in the game.

Thanks goes out to DarK-SuN for posting information on this title. Check out the thread to join in the discussion!

We love seeing Dreamcast titles get a second lease on life through digital distribution and while we knew this one was coming, we're still excited to see a firm release date announced! Sonic's debut Dreamcast title, Sonic Adventure, is slated to launch on Xbox 360 Live Arcade later this month, according to a post made to Sega's official US blog on Tuesday. The best-selling game marked a huge transition in the Sonic franchise toward 3D environments and is one of the most highly regarded 3D Sonic titles to date.

The game is said to be redone in HD (though, this does not appear to include support for 16:9) and will include all of the content that players loved from the original, including the Chao Garden, a virtual pet minigame. A follow-up release on Playstation Network was also hinted at, so hang in there if you're a Playstation 3 owner looking to relive this classic. Sonic Adventure launches September 15th on Xbox Live Arcade for the low price of just 800 Microsoft Points ($10 USD).

The day of birthday celebrations continue, with Sega announcing a Sonic video contest which will send one lucky winner and a friend to Tokyo, Japan. To win, participants much create a video showing off their love for Sonic and post it to YouTube. Entries will be judged on creativity, effort, and entertainment. Bonus points will be given for submissions that get Sonic in the public eye (viral marketing, anyone?). The top ten videos will be posted on the official Sonic 4 website, where the winner will then be selected by the fans.

The grand prize? A trip for the winner and a friend to Tokyo, Japan to visit Sega headquarters, meet with Sonic Team, and get some exclusive play time with Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode I. Two iPod Touch prize packs are also up for grabs and 100 random winners will receive free Sonic swag.

We think this is a great contest and in the spirit of things, would like to raise the stakes even higher. We know there are a lot of Sonic fans here on PSO-World and would love to see one of you win. Creatively slip a PSO-World reference into your video and place in the top ten and we'll throw in a Phantasy Star swag bundle to go with any additional prizes you win from Sega! Be sure to post your entry in our forums for all to see and we may even spotlight it on the front page, hopefully netting you some bonus points during the judging process!

Check out the official Sonic 4 site for the full contest rules. Entries are limited to one per person and the deadline for submissions is Monday, July 12th at 9:00AM Pacific time. Good luck everyone!
