They are calling this event the "Illustration Festival" and are asking fans to submit original, unpublished artwork covering any game in the Phantasy Star series.

The guidelines for submission are as follows:

  • Submission period: 12/19/12 to 1/16/13
  • Art relating to any game in the Phantasy Star series
  • Works must be original, unpublished, and created by the submitter
  • Accepted format is JPEG, up to 1MB in size
  • Image dimensions must be 1280x720

There is no mention of any prizes or awards at this time, but we'll keep you updated on any further information that comes in!

For those looking to submit an original work, SEGA has provided a submission form on the official PSO2 JP players site. A SEGA ID is not required to participate, though the form does require an email address, artist name (or pseudonym), title, and comments.

Our friends over at Shogai PSO have posted some interesting snippets from an interview with PSO2 producer Satoshi Sakai and director Yuya Kimura. In the interview, which was released today (Dec 13th) in the Phantasy Star Online 2 Master Guide Book, the developers talk about some of their plans for the future of PSO2.

Specifically, they mention that they intend to release more high level content and a new boss sometime in March 2013. They also intend to put together a new road map for the next 6 months of the game's development by the end of the year. Combined with the Arkz Clones update coming in January, it sounds like the stream of PSO2 content will continue to flow well into 2013. In fact, the interview seems to indicate that the development team has enough to keep them busy all the way to December 2013, and that content updates should continue monthly.

In addition, Sakai and Kimura talk a little about the weapon potential release ("Latent Ability") system that was added on December 5th. According to the interview, they plan to expand on this system and would like to make abilities available on more existing weapons as well. It also looks like they are considering having weapon abilities that will boost the power or effectiveness of certain PAs while that weapon is equipped.

A big thanks to Shogai PSO for posting the info and Mike for the translation clarifications!

Today marks the release of PSO2's Master Guide Book in Japan. The 160-page publication is said to be packed with useful Phantasy Star Online 2 information, even containing data as recent as December's content updates.

Inside the guide, players will find loads of details on weapons, photon arts, technics, client orders, units, part sets, costumes and accessories. In addition, it will contain information on new features, such as the recently released Excube system, as well as commentary from PSO2 producer Satoshi Sakai and director Yuya Kimura.

The guide is priced at 1,200 yen (about $14) and includes item codes for three weapons: a partizan, launcher, and wired lance (see picture). To those looking to import, it is currently available at PlayAsia, though is still listed as a pre-order at the time of this posting.

PSO2's next major content update is live , bringing with it the new ship-wide boss event featuring Dark Falz, as well as the new Pyroxene Shop where players can trade for 10-star weapons and items. In addition, new weapons have been added and there were also a number of bug fixes implemented. You may have already read about these additions in our previous story, but here's a recap (this article is still being updated with the latest information):

In this latest epic, two-stage, multi-party boss battle featuring Dark Falz, players will first have to take on "Falz Arms". Players of any level, and in any difficulty, can participate in this ship-wide emergency quest to weaken Falz and unlock his second stage. However, the ship will only have 30 minutes to inflict the required amount of damage. The amount of damage required will be based on ship population when the quest becomes available and players will see announcements updating them on the ship's progress.

You might say Dark Falz is well armed...

Once the required damage has been dealt, the second phase (a seperate emergency quest) of the battle will be accessible. In the second phase, players will battle the boss' true form, Dark Falz Elder, formerly sealed away on the planet Naberius. This form has many arms and will be a challenge to defeat. Players must clear the first stage at least once to participate in the second stage.

This update will also include the new Pyroxene Shop, which will allow players to trade in rare stones (Rainbow Iritista) for ?10 weapons and other items. It has been confirmed that these stones can be acquired by defeating Dark Falz in the new emergency quests.

    Technical Details:

  • Update Size: 36MB
  • Launcher Version: 01.05.01
  • Game Version: 1.0201.2
  • First Time Download Size: 5.4GB

  • See the above forum thread for more detailed patch notes, pics and discussion!

The maintenance window is scheduled for 9:00PM EST to 3:00AM EST tonight (8pm-2am CST, 7pm-1am MST, 6pm-12am PST). While you're waiting for the game to update, be sure to stop by the PSO2 forums for the latest Phantasy Star Online 2 discussions!

Yesterday's massive content update brought with it some unintended bugs that have been causing players to change colors, freeze at loading screens, and shake uncontrollably. The team over at SEGA is on top of it, though, announcing this morning that some fixes are on the way and a 6-hour emergency maintenance will be taking place from 8:00am to 2:00pm JST on 12/7/12 (for those of us in the States, that's tonight from 6pm to midnight EST / 5pm-11pm CST / 4pm-10pm MST / 3pm-9pm PST).

The update will be attempting to correct the following bugs and issues:

  • Being stuck at the loading screen
  • Certain PAs and tech causing the screen to shake excessively
  • Character's skin gaining a redish hue under certain conditions
  • NPC skins becoming strange colors under certain conditions
  • Certain techs that wouldn't normally be blocked by obstacles, like rafoie, being blocked by obstacles

  • Additional bug fixes are also being worked on, but will come at a later time (possibly in Tuesday's update). A big thanks to Mike for posting the news in the above forum thread!

Phantasy Star Online 2 producer Satoshi Sakai and director Yuya Kimura had a ridiculously lengthy interview with gaming site 4gamer recently, discussing a number of details regarding PSO2 and its upcoming Vita counterpart. There was one interesting section of the interview, in particular, regarding upcoming content for January that will possibly have players facing clones of themselves (and others) in a new type of quest. It looks as though this is likely the "future worse than death" content briefly hinted at the end of November. Here's how it's going to work:

According to the interview, players will be transported to the darker nest in this new quest, where their mission will be to escape in one piece. There will be no returning to the camp ship, like with other quests. Instead, players must escape and clear the quest or fail and be kidnapped by the darkers. In the event that they clear the quest and escape, darkers will use recorded data to clone the player(s) and these clones will appear in future emergency trials to fight subsequent challengers. These clones will have the same appearance, use the same skills and abilities, and even utilize the same auto-words as the original players.

It will be possible for players to encounter clones of themselves and, in these cases, they can receive additional quest rewards, such as photon spheres and a special title for defeating their clone. This quest is supposed to, in a way, serve as a form of PvP, though the clones will obviously be controlled by AI and not real players. This new "escape quest" is scheduled to be implemented on January 9, 2013.

There were some other interesting bits of info mentioned in the interview, though Arks clones definitely took the cake. Here are some of the other highlights:

Phantasy Star Online 2 (JP) for Playstation Vita

  • PSO2 Vita download is roughly 4GB in its current debugging state
  • PSO2 Vita's Special Package Clarifications:
  • Players can only choose TWO of the 8 default costumes from PSP2
  • Bonus mag device produces an angel that represents Emilia
  • Little Wing stickers can be placed on character's body to replace default Arks logo
  • Music disc allows players to listen to intro and ending themes from PSP in jukebox
  • PSO2 Vita differences compared to PSO2 PC:
  • Less enemies at same time and fewer emergency missions
  • Fewer emergency trials
  • Maps will be smaller to allow for quicker completion
  • PSE Burst will last longer on Vita
  • Differences will also apply to PC players if playing in a Vita block
  • PSO2 Vita will include offline character creation
  • Playstation mascots Toro and Kuro will give out client orders on Vita
  • Toro and Kuro partner cards can be obtained on Vita, used on PC & Vita
  • Once you've gained favor with Turo and Kuro, they may give you Turo and Kuro mag evolution devices.
  • Toro and Kuro are rendered using their own custom shaders
  • Phantasy Star Online 2 ES (JP) (for Android & iOS)

  • Release date has been postponed to improve quality and further test
  • The developers plan to finish working on Vita version first
  • Should support Android version 2.3 and iPhone 4+

  • Current Status of Exploits / RMT / Counter-Measures

  • SEGA continuing to crack down on accounts in violation of terms of use
  • Almost 80,000 accounts suspended during November
  • PSO2 currently has around 50,000-60,000 concurrent connections on average
  • There are more than 500 blocks across 10 ships for GMs to monitor

  • New Years Festivities

  • New Years content / scratch will release on December 26th
  • The lobbies will change in real time on December 31st at 11:59PM JST

  • If we happened to miss anything (which is definitely possible, given the huge amount of text that was translated), this post will be updated with any new details that turn up. There are also a load of additional screenshots from PSO2 Vita and the new Dark Falz battle within the 4gamer interview, so be sure to go check those out! As always, we'd love to hear your comments, so let us know what you think of these new details either in the comments section or our PSO2 forums!

As part of the December 5th update and holiday festivities, SEGA has launched a new campaign to reward players who complete the limited-time emergency quest, "Merry Christmas on Ice."

While the quest is going to be available until December 26th, the window for participating in this campaign is only one week. Players who clear Merry Christmas on Ice during the campaign period will receive the following rewards (to be distributed during the December 19th update):

  • If you want to make sure you don't miss out, the quest is guaranteed to appear on December 7th, 8th, and 9th at 8:00pm JST (6am EST / 5am CST / 4am MST / 3am PST). Please note that it is not required that you participate during one of these three event times. Good luck!
