• PSU Universe Reduction and Renaming Coming October 24

    Some changes will be coming to the way you see individual universes when you log in to Phantasy Star Universe and view the universe transporter this Friday. Both PC/PS2 and Xbox 360 servers will receive not only a reduction in the total number of universes, but also a complete naming overhaul. Now, instead of seeing "01 Universe," "02 Universe," etc., players will have a list of named universes to choose from, based on various constellations.

    The PC/PS2 servers will be reduced from 18 to 10 universes, while the Xbox 360 servers will go from 30 to 20 universes. The new universe names are as follows:

    Replacing 01-10 Universe on both servers:

    • 01: Leo (Guide)
    • 02: Caelum
    • 03: Delphinus
    • 04: Gemini
    • 05: Libra
    • 06: Orion
    • 07: Phoenix
    • 08: Scorpius
    • 09: Chamaeleon
    • 10: Draco

    Replacing 11-20 Universe on the Xbox 360 server:

    • 11: Auriga
    • 12: Centaurus
    • 13: Eridanus
    • 14: Hydra
    • 15: Lyra
    • 16: Perseus
    • 17: Crux
    • 18: Tucana
    • 19: Pyxis
    • 20: Aquila

    Update: Maintenance is complete and the servers are back up. However, a few small changes were made to the universe renaming. First, identifying numbers were added back. So now instead just seeing "Caelum" or "Perseus," you'll see "02: Caelum" or "16: Perseus." Second, the guide server has been renamed "Leo (Guide)" to fix a text-limits issue. Third, the universe known originally as "Lupus" has been renamed "Lyra" based on user feedback. And finally, the server list currently is centered in-game. This is only temporary and is planned to be moved to left-alignment. For full details on these changes, see the official announcement here.

    Update: Reports have been coming in that the intended box fix for Bladed Legacy may not have occurred as players still are receiving only recovery items and -ium metals from the mission's clear boxes. We're awaiting official word on this for confirmation, and will update this post once we hear something.

      Hm. I think these changes will be nice. And I think I prefer these silly star-sign names more than the not-making- sense "02 Universe" (though, at least that was better than "1:02 Universe" ... What was that, a freakin' clock?) Can't wait for this to be done...

      You know I'm wondering if the people who make this game actually play it? I for 1 sure am glad the servers will now have a name and we will miss game time while they do it. After all the name universe 1 just effected my enjoyment of the game so much I almost couldn't stand it. It is/was even worse then those monomate drops out of S2 boss boxes.

      I am terrible with constellations though I wish (Tower of) Caelum and (Skies of Arcadia/Eternal Arcadia) Delphinus wasn't #2 and #3.

      Gaara, they were reducing the amount of servers anyway, renaming won't take them any longer. But if you must, continue bitching on how you won't be able to play psu for a few hours. It'll probably be done during the normal downtime on thursday nights, where you can't play anyway.

      i think its a great idea, on ps2/pc we dont need that many uni's, and they sound similar to zodiac signs, which is awesome, im staying in scorpius in solo hunts @_@

      I actually like this idea. We didn't need that many universes. Even at the peak times(the beginning of the game...) we only would need 10.

      Hmmm, this is not a good sign. Renaming the server names is just an illusion that this is a positive thing for PSU. Sure, new names, cool. Thats fine with me. Name the servers off whatever you want. I think the real point here is how there will be less servers.
      This is a sign that Sega is aware that the community does not need 30 servers for the Xbox version, or the 20 or so servers for the PC/PS2 versions of the game. The number of people playing PSU is getting smaller and smaller. Sega knows this. This is the beginning of the end. Sega pulled the plug on Dreamcast PSO, Xbox PSO, (is Game Cube PSO still online? I don't know, never played it, but I doubt it is) and sooner than we like to admit, good-bye PSU. Maybe in a few years, who knows for sure. This is just a small step towards the end of PSU, just like the rest of them. Enjoy the game while you can, I know I am.

      No, we didn't even need that many servers to begin with. So now they're taking away some so people might stop soloing on random unis, and be on the same servers as others. If you were at the GM meeting Melchior, (Ruby Eclipse here) said that SEGA plans on supporting all PSU versions for awhile longer.

      What difference does any of this make? Everyone is still going to go to the server with the most stars. And we'll all be in front of White Beast to boot. I'm not for or against this, because it doesn't affect me, or anyone else at all.

      The people who wanted to stay clear of the popular Universes will still do it anyway. Huddling them all into a smaller number of Universes will change NOTHING. Just expect a lot more locked games.
      I can understand why inactive servers are being removed but seriously, this won't make any difference to PSU as a whole. Also, I give the 'guide' Universe a month before it's not used for its intended purpose.

      I give it however long it takes me to log on for it to not be used for its intended purpose ;3 .
      The new names are cool we had names in PSO. Now people can make a pseudo emotional connection with their favorite server.
      I was just thinking reducing the # of servers would make sense, now maybe there will be more than one universe with more than a half star =o

      I like the names much more than the numbered. numbering universes in a game seems like a debugging thing you would do while the story/history behind the story were being fleshed out. then perhaps the Sega crew forgot to name them for 2 years.... X)
      anyhow, I agree with Neith. i can't imagine that the guide server will be used for guiding new players for long. I think it'll just become a place where low level players can actually find a party that won't kick them immediatly, and that high level chars avoid.

      Seems to be a "no" on the Bladed Legacy fix, but I'm still awaiting official word. Just in case, I've removed it from the article so as to not get too many more folks' hopes up.
