New Details About PSU Supplemental Update on Xbox 360
By S-T-H at 05/26/2010 - 20:51
Ambition of the Illuminus

Since the release of Phantasy Star Universe's Supplemental Update for PC/PS2 in Japan, there have been a couple other significant additions to the game. After the recently announced Supplemental Update for the Xbox 360 version of Ambition of the Illuminus, many players have been wondering exactly which features and content would make the transition.

The PSU community team has taken note of these concerns and GM Edward has posted a number of details on one of the most heavily discussed features; GUARDIANS Cash.

In Japan, the GUARDIANS Cash system involved microtransactions and as such has been seen as a negative by a significant portion of the Xbox 360 playerbase. It should relieve those players to find out that there will not be a method of paying additional money for in-game content or features for the Xbox 360 version of PSU. Instead, this content will be adapted through other means. Examples of possible distribution methods included releasing the items as mission rewards or making them available in the casino, but nothing has been finalized yet. Expect to see more information on this content as the update approaches.

Additionally, it was revealed that the limited, free-play mode known as "Community Course" or "Free Course" will not be part of the Xbox 360 version of the game. Despite this, the demo is still said to be an effective tool for bringing new players into the game.

For discussion of this news, there is a thread progressing in the forums.

Hmmmm....would have been nice to see the Free play included. It might be the only thing that would get me to play PSU again.

GM Edward did mention that they would have other methods of revitalizing the server population, but didn't give any details. Maybe there will be free play weekends, or some other kind of incentive for players to return and try out the update.

This literaly turned my day from a total and utter hell to a walk in heaven. GC would have ruined the game for me as I can bairly afford what i already pay for (although if I could afford it i wouldn't pay to get in-game items) and looking at the JP servers and PSU pedia I noticed that all the best items were GC which really made me depressed. But now the game won't be ruined for everyone because your chances of getting these items no longer depends on if you spent extra money or not. On the ways to get new people i hope this means they will advertise a little more and hopefully make PSU "Games on Demand" which would help not only new players find the game but for old players aswell. This will truely be great for the 360 PSU and will make it hugely different from the JP ps2/pc. R.I.P. PSU pedia's predictions based off of the JP servers...

I'm fine with the free-play mode being kicked. When I asked most of my friends (who quit PSU over the past few months/years) to try it I listed all the restrictions. EVERY single person said "What's the point of playing?" and I said "Well... Its free." The conversations usually ended at that point and they go back laughing to Call of Duty. The restrictions wasn't enough to reunite me with old PSU buddies so excluding it is no big loss IMO. I am glad to see the Gaurdian's Cash is being kicked as well. Glad the 360 playerbase made a strong enough impact to influence these decisions.

I do not belive it was the playerbase at all. In my opinion I just think it was Sega being lazy and did not want to cut through the red tape with Microsoft.

Hmm... Good point. I think by now Sega's reputation of "being lazy" is considered "common sense" by anybody.
