Phantasy Star Online 2 Revealed in Sega's TGS Video Stream!
By Tomeeboy at 09/16/2010 - 12:34am

Viewers of Sega's live video stream from the Tokyo Game Show were the first to catch a glimpse of Sega's upcoming Phantasy Star game for 2011, Phantasy Star Online 2! The surprising reveal took place at the end of a montage which showcased every Phantasy Star game from the past 10 years and also included a peak at Phantasy Star Portable 2: Infinity, which was recently revealed as well. While no actual game footage was shown, a logo for Phantasy Star Online 2 did appear at the end of the video, along with some basic information indicating that the game would be released sometime in 2011 (presumably in Japan) for the PC.

Phantasy Star Online 2 Revealed!

It looks like this is indeed PSO's 10th Anniversary surprise that many were hoping for and we'll likely be finding out more once Sega releases an official statement. I hope this isn't PSO/PSZ's game engine with better graphics. PSU was a good upgrade if you ask me, they just had to carry over the epic feel PSO had. So let this NOT have the same dry gameplay, ploxorz.

things pso2 needs. large explorable worlds. room decorating needs to be enhanced, more items and don't use a grid system please. mission zones. give us citys with more exploreability! new weapons! new mags! new races! tons of clothing! artists who are not color blind! (im looking at you shirt that lists purple and yellow but is black and green>.>) keep elements but don't rely on weaknesses, use mob types like in previouse games, dark, beast, machine, ect. use old grinding system! not psu's. dont use psy's crafting system, if you add a crafting system be fair.

This is like a dream come true! Sure PSU was good, and so was PSZ, but they weren't hard enough. I think that was one of the charms of the old PSO. You didn't just sit down and level too 200 in a few days, you hand to work for it. I agree with Goldbrease, change some things, but keep the core. it was good that way. Most of all, though, keep the style. I want to see Dark Falz as PSO fans know him. I like the extra races of PSU, but thats PSU. Stick to the original three races. And the three class types. Don't give an option to switch, or in anyway change your class. That was part of the fun, having a variety of what team members can do, though, maybe weaken the Force a little.

PC was what ruined PS2. Nice going, Sega. PS3, 360, or bust.

OMG! SO HAPPY! When this is officially announced, if they don't announce console versions I am going to start bugging Sega in every way I can think of to demand a 360 or PS3 version!

I'm sure it'l be released on consoles, at least for 360. It might come a little bit after the PC release, but I'm almost certain they won't have it exclusive to PC users. At least I'd hope not, that would really suck to all original PSO fans, a lot of which who probably don't have a nice enough computer to run it.

by GUARDIANDNL on Thu, 09/16/2010 - 9:50am
i´ll have to save money for a very good PC XD... cause i´ll buy it... also the video give me the chills....

Hopefully we see some kind of gameplay details/footage soon, but it's nice to see this confirmed. Maybe Newmans will be worth a damn again!

^at post saying PC ruined Phantasy Star: This has to be some kind of sick joke if you have any technical knowledge whatsoever. Consoles can be hacked too (Dreamcast PSO? Gamecube PSO? If there was no PC version it was only a matter of time before SOMEONE figured out a PS2 hack). A shitty useless anti-hack is no excuse for something to be "PC's" fault. PC was and always will be the most customizable platform with the smoothest gameplay and best graphics. Either way, really excited to hear about this and I can't wait to play it!

I think this is pretty interesting news. The only thing is, is whether Sega is really ready for this. I would love a good PC game of this, don't get me wrong. However, throwing your gauntlet into the most over-crowded and competitive market is the main risk here. On the consoles, the competition of online RPGs against Phantasy Star is bleak. On the PC, you have to perform literal miracles to get noticed and to hold the crowd. On there, you compete against many developers, many with very strong post-release support. Speedy updates, and the idea that almost every time a gamer turns around, there's some new content added with news and announcements. And that's even for the Free-to-Play and One-time-payment models. Those who can't keep up with the Joneses, in the PC world, usually get left in the dust. That's my only main concern. Not to mention, how it's extremely rare for a Sci-fi Themed ORPG or MMO to survive in the PC world. To a certain degree, if you count (anywhere), only EVE online and Phantasy Star have held any kind of longevity for Sci-Fi online server-supported experience. I wish them the best of luck, but I also warn them that if they expect Phantasy Star Online 2 to work, they will have to go several steps above and beyond their previous games. Even though Phantasy Star online has been more straight-up action, it still steps in the toughest competitive market to have the success you want with it. Basically, you got to have an Action Sci-fi model with the support on the level of Blizzard. A very very tall order.

I think this will be a console game too. Console generations usually only last around 5 or 6 years and the current systems are lagging way beyond current PC capabilities. I'm sure new consoles are on the way soon, but they are holding off on the announcements to sell their gimmicky motion-based crap (although that is starting to look good now, new Panzer Dragoon!?!?). So of course Sega can't come out and say that they are possibly developing this game on a console that hasn't been announced yet.

I would be happier about this announcement if PSO2 were coming out on the PS3 or the 360. I don't play PC games and not even the announcement of PSO2 will get me to budge from this stance.

I'm sorry be all negative and stuff but... ugh given SEGA's track record with the online Phantasy Star games. I'll expect to receive this game 1 year after the JP release and have NO new content updates until 9 months after release. PS5 plz

They might as well just put the original on PSN with Sonic Adventure Battle and charge 9.99 for it. Would've saved them their advertising budget.

D'ont care about how they enhance it i liked every ps before also dont care about monthly fee lolz...Just want it on ps3...

by Jepp027 on Sat, 01/22/2011 - 1:51pm
I am holding my breath for a console version. More than likely if it comes to consoles that it will be on the xbox 360 since Microsoft has better hacker prevention methods (like wanna play it hacked, cannot logon to live). I hope it can get to the PS3 cause everyone needs to play this wonderful game. Here is my wish list. -Mags -Section ID's -Photon Blasts -Dark Falz -Achievements/Trophies -Rare Enemies (Hildeblue etc) -Keep Character classes same as PSO Ver 2. -Scape Dolls -Megid -Rare Drops
