Update on PlayStation Network Outage - Compromised Personal Information
By Tomeeboy at 04/26/2011 - 21:15
General

An update regarding the recent PSN downtime has been posted today on the official Playstation blog, indicating that the reason for the downtime is due to an unauthorized intrusion into Sony's network. Patrick Seybold, Sr. Director of Corporate Communications & Social Media, has released an official statement to notify PlayStation Network and Qriocity customers that the intrusion occurred sometime between April 17th and April 19th and it is believed that user account information was compromised. Here is an excerpt from the statement that details what information they believe has been stolen:

"Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained."

The full statement can be found here. Oh, and for those who don't care about their personal information being stolen and just want back online, Sony also indicated that they intend to have PlayStation Network and Qriocity services restored within a week. Unfortunately, this also seems to be the first opportunity users will have to update their PSN passwords. In the meantime, it might be a good idea for PSN customers to update passwords on any sites that share the same email and/or username as their PSN accounts.

That's all you're worried about? Sony just said that people most likely have all your personal information, including your credit card information. Anyway, I'm glad all my PSN info is wrong now. I recently moved, and changed banks, so the only thing they would have is my birth date.

How'd this get on the front page of PSOworld? Doesn't seem like this is related to Phantasy star at all.

We connect to PSN to play Phantasy Star Portable 2, although I'm not sure if that's still up. There's always... Phantasy Star... Zero XD

This is the second time so many peoples' personal information has been compromised within the past month! First the Epsilon Data Management breach affecing Best Buy, Verizon Wireless, Chase Bank and Victoria’s Secret customers, and now this happens! Millions have been affected by these two events. I'm a HUGE fan of online shipping, but this is seriously making me think twice about continuing it. Identity theft is NOT something I want to deal with in the future. I would highly suggest anyone affected to change passwords.

I still hate the fact that it's taken this long to get anything other than 'we're working on it'. It doesn't fill me with confidence that all my data was able to be accessed, and I'll be watching my bank account daily.

At this point, I want PSN back on but not to play- I want to change all my passwords. I'd definitely echo the 'change any other sites passwords' too, we really don't know how widespread the damage has been.

i just changed my email password, now they can't get into my email to see were i go. now i just got to keep an eye on my credit card. looks like there is a possibility xbox live was hacked to, seems banned consoles became unbanned, mc is claiming this did not happen, but with the way things have been i think its more likely then they want to admit. http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/27/banned-xbox-360s-briefly-allowed-back-on-xbox-live-promptly-ban/

And to think that are a lot of ppl saying "I'm going to quit PSN and going to get a Xbox" =p At least Sony never said "you can't trust message boards."

Looks like there's a class action lawsuit being filed, from California of course.

I had to spend an hour changing all my passwords because of this. All I can hope for now is for the PSN to become available again, and for my account to be unaffected.

The clock ticks and yet the servers are still not back on. And I can't go back to xboxlive(no more gold)(gold 3 months expensive). Theirs always Zombie mode offline on XBOX360 CoD: BO. That or Halo Reach, or PSP2, or GTA4 on PS3. To me it seems Japan(or the East) has much better games than the ones here.
