• Phantasy Star Online 2 Vita Details

The official Japanese Phantasy Star Online 2 blog was updated with new details about the Sony PlayStation Vita port of Phantasy Star Online 2. The purpose of the new information was to clear up some of the concerns that people had expressed about the Vita version. Here is a summary of the information:

    • Vita Updates - It will be possible to distribute updates and make balance changes to the Vita version.
    • Online Security - Phantasy Star Online 2 will be an online only game. All data will be stored on the servers. Also, the Vita version will use the same security measures as the PC version.
    • 3G Connections - It will be possible to play Phantasy Star Online 2 using a wireless connection or 3G network. However, the connection method for a 3G network will be different.
    • PC/Vita Compatibility - The current plan is to allow PC and Vita players to play together. However, there is a chance that the PC and Vita players maybe separated depending on early testing results.

I'm glad I decided to buy a 3G model this weekend, and if anyone is considering getting it, until the end of the month if you get the 3G model you get a free 8GB memory card, for me that was worth the extra $50 to get the 3G version just for the free 8GB card.

Vita is a worthless, antiquated system, which the current gaming market has no need for, and should frankly, just go die. I don't understand why developers choose to make games for it, when there is PS3 and 360 - consoles with a 50 million+ userbase; which developers have over 5 years of experience in optimising for. Why take a chance, and risk throwing developer money down the drain, on Vita -- unless of course, Sony is paying them a healthy sum for console exclusivity...

It's not worthless to everyone. In fact, many love it. Not everyone has time, when they're at home, to sit down for an hour or more and play video games. For example, I usually only get time now, with my busy schedule, to play on the trains to and from work. Lots of people want portable gaming systems. Home consoles are not the only great thing out there. Neither are portable consoles. Pluses and minuses, pros and cons. Everything has them. That's just the way life is.

I have had, bad business with sony in the past for them not wanting to back up their extended warrenties, its the reason im out a PS3 with backwards compat with ps2, and as for my psp 1000 and 2000 both fell appart, my 3000 is still functioning for now, ive tested the vita, I admit its powerful little system, im just debating, what other games are on it that I may like, for the time being its on hold, but PSO2 might be the deal maker for me, sure I got a power pc, but i like a controller (sorry started with games on atari 2600) and the controller is what I prefer over a mouse and keyboard bu yeah im tempted to buy the non 3g vita just for PSO2 (if pso2 gets a NA release) and depends if its gunna be pay to play again or what, at least have better payment options then what PSU had please sega

from a business standpoint, this arguement does make perfect sense, but its likely being dev'd for vita so sega can learn how to dev on that system

Yeah, but are you really gonna play an online RPG for a few minutes on the train? Are you going to quit out on your party, when it's your stop? You talk about not having the time to play games for an hour, but PSO2 isn't the sort of game you'd play for a few minutes at a time, anway. It's also online only, and will likely drain the Vita's battery in a short time, so I don't expect you'd get much play time out of it on the go. In the end, you'd be better off just playing at home, teathered to an AC adapter, which at that point, you might as well just play the PC version. A home console version simply makes more sense, pragmatically and from a business sense. Regardless, I'm playing the PC version either way.

It's more likely Sega's ploy to make a Monster Hunter-esque game for the system, because they know how popular that series was on PSP. Only, I don't think the two games are comparible. Whereas MH can be played offline and works well in a portable setting; PSO 2, especially if it's online-only, will not.

Wow, you should read your own post again. I was replying to a post you made which did not mention PSO2 at all. You only mentioned your gripes about the Vita. Therefore, what was my reply about?

You have poor reading comprehension. My first post was speaking from a business standpoint, not a personal "gripe", that Vita is a redundant system for developers, who would achieve better success on consoles, given the greater userbase and developer exeperience. You then replied with a non sequitur about your personal needs for the system, and its relation to your lifestyle, ignoring the core of my actual arguement. Look at Overlord Zenon's reply; his was pertinent, unlike yours. I then replied back to you, explaining to you, given the information you told me about your lifestyle, that playing a game like PSO2 on the Vita, wouldn't be an ideal experience. Afterall, you said: "I usually only get time now, with my busy schedule, to play on the trains to and from work." This implies the only way you will possibly play PSO2, is on the Vita - and on the train. Is playing PSO2 on Vita, the ideal way to experience the game? It clearly is not. And that similar arguement can be said about most of Vita's library, that the games would be better played on a home system, be it for battery concerns, the nature of the game, the graphics being better on x system, etc. For games specifically designed for the platform, it's a different story, but most of Vita's library consist of console-style games. Which brings me back to my arguement: that developers are wasting their time and money, making these sort of games for Vita.
