PSO2 Western Release Delayed - Officially Confirmed by SEGA
By Tomeeboy at 03/26/2013 - 10:10am
PSO2

The Western release of Phantasy Star Online 2, previously announced in July of last year, has been confirmed by SEGA to be officially delayed. Originally slated for an "early 2013" release in North America, PSO2 failed to make an appearance at this year's event at PAX East and there have been no official updates on its release until now.

"We don't have any specifics, but will update everyone as soon as there are more details to share," said a SEGA representative when asked about the delay.

The Japanese release of PSO2 continues to perform well, with the game recently launching on the Playstation Vita platform. As of February, there had reportedly been over 1.7 million player IDs registered for the service.

We will attempt to get further information on this delay and will post more details as they become available. In the meantime, be sure to check the PSO2 forums for the latest buzz and discussions surrounding Phantasy Star Online 2!

At least they finally announced that it will indeed see a NA release.....eventually. Oh, and before someone starts the "It will be a year behind so it won't be worth it" nonsense, try to apply that psychic talent toward something actually useful.

Not surprising. Sadly I can see this game bombing in NA. Unfortunately I don't think PSO2 is good, some of the new features are neat but I don't like the PSU elements.

I played PSO on the gamecube up till the point they shut down the servers and then played Blue Burst on PC for ages after it shut down on Schtack server, and I Loved PSU put about 1000+ hours on it compared to my 2000+ on PSO, and PSO2 Isn't gonna be any different got about 70ish hours on the japanese one and i LOVE it its awesome

Sadly, being delayed means that 99.9% of the time they are just lying to us to make us get our hopes up. There will be no US release. And it's will be interesting to see if/when I'm right.

The game isn't even started yet, and it already got delayed.. What about NA 's regular update delay that was so hot in PSU era then? Although, it is already about to jump out of the early 2013 zone, then they just tell us that it get delayed now? <,<

by Maverickhey on Wed, 03/27/2013 - 10:04pm
Well, my friends and I put it in a good humorous way. "If you wont come to the west, the west will come to you." currently have 13 of my friends playing the Japan servers and if they choose to actually separate the servers and trickle content (Like PSU) I will remain on the Japan servers.

They made it annoyingly impossible for outsiders to buy things in game unless you go through that asia cash nonsense (lol I forget what its called) which costs like 4 times as much as using a normal credit card I'm glad i was able to grab a character slot before they locked us out of their system

"Times is tough." They've cured HIV before the beta of this game could be released in the west. True story.

Pretty sure they are just bullshitting and there probably won't be a US release it wouldn't surprise me that or it's another year plus away. Look at PSP2i.

More whom complain. Huzzah. But this game with psu elements...this is beyond that (or at least just turned into another rpg game that allows jumping) and more. I'm still surprise this is still on-going. I could care less on what they decide. Hackers are still the problem at hand. Heheh.

i dont care if it takes another 6 months as long as we get it eventually then im fine with that. the game was fun in the japanese servers but i just got frustrated and felt like i was playing blind folded most of the time. so i stopped playing it. maybe ill get back into the jp servers soon just to get my pso2 fix. haha

The mysterious and lengthy silence and as well as the delay are because Sega US/EU has completely changed what they planned to do with International Version. They've realized how stupid and pointless it is to have separate servers, and now they are trying to convince Sega JP to allow International Version to share servers with JP Version, but Sega JP is not interested and is most likely down-right opposing the idea. With East and West at an impasse, there has been no progress made and thus nothing to update regarding the International Version. For those who believe the announcement is BS and that there is no Western version coming, you may be partly right. But it is not due to Sega US's stupidity or anything like that, but rather, Sega JP's refusal to share servers. We all know how much the JP players hate the flood of gajins already. If Sega JP OFFICIALLY approved of outsiders... the JP fan backlash would be brutal. Sega JP is more than satisfied with PSO2's profits, and has no interest risking that just so Sega US/EU can get a piece of the pie. However, once down the road Sega JP is no longer wowed by PSO2's profits (the profits are not bad, but not as high as they used to be), they will allow Sega US/EU to make not so much a new version of PSO2, but rather, more like an official English Patch for the JP version of PSO2. They will offer Ships designated for the new regions so that the JP players won't cry about all the gajins, but Sega JP will quietly NOT actually force us to use these specific ships. And in a sense, we will all finally win. All players and companies can be happy. I expect to see the release of this "official English Patch" in June. Late June. And it will NOT be voice-dubbed. And once this finally happens, we will shortly see the Vita version come out in the West too. That is my prediction. Thank you for reading.

Wow... I really like what you just said, but June seems way too early. I'm betting on October at the very earliest, more likely 2014 or never. /trying to be pessimistic so I'm not disappointed more than I already am

by Cla on Sun, 04/28/2013 - 11:14am

Being as that we are basically in May and still not a peep from Sega, I am doubting my prediction of June. I would've thought Sega US would want to capitalize on all the kids being out of school, but then again, maybe it would be better to wait till the cold weather kicks in and everyone will be spending more time inside. You definitely don't want to miss out on everyone asking for Pre-paid AC cards from Xmas, so I don't expect them to wait till 2014. I'm changing my prediction to mid-September.

by Cagedtaytay on Tue, 04/09/2013 - 4:39am

Yah, you know, LIKE THE ORIGINAL PSO. Anybody remember Select-Chat or w/e it was called that would auto-translate selected phrases into the language of the recipients games? Yah, good times right? Anyway an internation thing would be great, but I'm not getting my hopes up. My main concern is not when it will be released or even how far behind we'll be. It'll be HOW LONG we'll be behind. I think maybe a months or so after the US servers are up, they release things quicker (if possible) thank they did on the JP servers so they catch up. But meh, this is just me. I fear if too many people go JP then the US servers will suffer and get taken down. Not everyone has the ability/will to go JP, I'm one of them.

"We all know how much the JP players hate the flood of -racial slur redacted- already. If Sega JP OFFICIALLY approved of outsiders... the JP fan backlash would be brutal. Sega JP is more than satisfied with PSO2's profits, and has no interest risking that just so Sega US/EU can get a piece of the pie." That's really more than enough of a good reason to not agree. "They will offer Ships designated for the new regions so that the JP players won't cry about all the -racial slur redacted-, but Sega JP will quietly NOT actually force us to use these specific ships." 1. Is this something Sega America actually said they do? 2. Is it not possible that the japanese players would still be mad because us "-racial slur redacted-" would still be able to play on the Japanese servers? Especially because there are more than a few americans who play video games that would likely do so just to p--s them off.

Sega treats their foreign customers like shit. What else is new? Let me know when Sega stops being racist.

I don't know about anyone else. But I applaud their racism. Sure, NA and EU have a majority of English speakers. What other gaming company made separate servers just for the benefit and safety of there public. (Can only think of 1. Sorry)

Correction... In an update by Sakai, it has been reported 2.5 million Player IDs registered users and 93,000 registered simultaneous connections. It shot up by 1/3 since the vita release, and yet he is noticing that more people are playing on PC. Yeah, there is no doubt that PSO2 is the best thing that SEGA has going for them right now.

Finally! I've been waiting for them (SEGA) to make some kind-of announcement concerning PSO2. It's a good game and I'm sure it'll do pretty well here, I've heard quite a few people talking about it's release (in public, while I was listening in). Well, hopefully it comes out over here soon, if so I'll see you guys Online <(o.o)>:

SEGA seems to have something against money and success. Or maybe just Americans. If they don't get it into gear the Phantasy Star series will end up like MH and live the remainder of it's existence in the purgatory known as Nintendo, forever doomed to never know it's true potential as if it were to be on PC or a decent console that could fully support it. Anywho, I just hope it doesn't have PSU's crazy strict chat filter when it finally does come out.

I would never get it anyway unless they featured a character cross over (hahaha that isn't gonna happen). I've spent too much effort in the Japanese servers to restart.

by Cagedtaytay on Fri, 04/19/2013 - 2:16pm
Of course there wont be a character cross over, you're not even supposed to be on JP servers accroding to their ToS, so why would they waste time making something like that for us?

by RappysReaper on Tue, 04/16/2013 - 4:55pm
RappysReaper's picture
Why does Sega JP care! I mean even though you have to pay for some items its F2P and the majority of people aren't spending money just to get an edge on other players.. In my eyes JP would be getting more money if they just allowed western players in. I mean if worse comes to worse i'll just wait untill an official english patch comes out and i can play anyway.

Looks like PSO is dead in the West

by Benj38 on Fri, 04/19/2013 - 2:51pm
Yeah whoever made that game still don't get it, I've been playing the patched version for weeks and this looks way too much like PSU. Plus all that paying content just make me sick, it's like half of the (interesting) features needs to be paid for with real money. Please give us a full game we pay for but don't give us a free half-game. PSO is now clearly dead, maybe for the best, so the legend born from DC to GC remain unspoilt... More and more talented directors are now leaving video game industry, the end of an era for me. Too bad!

by Rekku on Fri, 04/19/2013 - 7:15pm
Rekku's picture
You have some gall to say that because a Japanese game (which is very popular in its native country) doesn't get localized in your country, the whole franchise is dead? It's always been this way; not all Japanese games come to America/Europe and not all American/European games come to Japan. Doesn't mean they aren't making enough money that they need help from the dwindling worldwide fanbase.

by Benj38 on Fri, 04/19/2013 - 11:31pm
I'm talking gameplay-wise, the pleasure I had playing PSO is long gone. I was afraid that this game would be too much like PSU and indeed, now it's here, it actually IS. So yeah, in my opinion PSO is dead, but it doesn't YOU cannot have fun playing the half-game! :) Anyway I was just giving my impressions on the game... sometimes I forget that the Internet is not a place where you can freely express yourself.

by Aciiddreamer on Sat, 04/20/2013 - 8:20am
Aciiddreamer's picture
you didn't know this. Freedom of expression is illegal on the internet, didn't you get the manual.

by Rekku on Sat, 04/20/2013 - 5:52pm
Rekku's picture
You didn't make it clear enough that you were talking primarily about your own opinion; that itself is fine, I had issue with the sentence blatantly saying "PSO is now clearly dead, maybe for the best, so the legend born from DC to GC remain unspoilt." To me that sounded like you were talking about the lack of localization, because that's what you replied to (the announcement of such). My apologies if you only meant your own enjoyment of the game.
