I discovered that Interact's 8X memory card works with Phantasy Star Online as long as it is the only memory card in a memory card/VMU slot. And would allow you to save one character to each block of the 8X memory card for a total of 8 characters. As an extra added bonus it comes with a cable and software to allow you to upload saves from the memory card to a computer. (In theory this could be used as a faster alternative to the email backup method, but I have not tested it yet.) There are certain memory cards where multiple character saving is not possible, however. My Pelican 4X memory card is not able to save multiple characters no matter what placement of VMUs/memory cards on my Dreamcast. However, the Pelican 4X is not entirely useless. When I want to take snapshots of the game using the snapshot trick, I am able to save up to 4 snapshots on my Pelican 4X memory card. (one shot per block) In an ironic twist, the Interact 8X memory card cannot take snapshots for some reason. I have yet to completely confirm that it does not work, but I probably will not use it for taking pictures anyways.
The Interact 8X was $29.95 US, the Pelican 4X was $34.95 US. Also, thanks to a link that gideon had made. It appears that the Pelican is just an extra-expensive version of the NEXUS 4X memory card. They have the same features, (Holds four times the amount of memory [800 blocks] as a normal VMU with no compression, and can be connected to a computer through the printer port with a unique cable that is sold separately.) except NEXUS one only costs $21.95 US. So if you plan on getting a 4X memory card, do yourself a favor and buy the NEXUS one or maybe the SEGA one.
Also, speaking of NEXUS, an Anonymous post was made reporting that the NEXUS 16X works with PSO as well. If the person who made this following post could tell us the price, that would be nice.
Got the Nexus 16x card (woot!) and it works great. Since it has PC backup I can have TONS of characters (now I just need the tons of time to play them). One thing I noticed in the docs that came with it are the fact that on it you need to wait at least 15 seconds after changing a page in order to have it recognized. DCkaz perhaps your mem card is going through the same time of switch time
I hope this information is useful to those who have been having trouble figuring out which memory cards to use with Phantasy Star Online.
