After a Guardian graduates from the
academy, they are assigned a Partner Machinery. A Partner Machinery is
used for item, mission, and information management. They normally
reside in your character's apartment, unless you take it with you in
your adventures. You can use them to store raw materials as well as
produce items. Ethan's Partner Machinery in Story Mode is
named PETE.

In Phantasy Star Online, an Item Bank was available to
hold extra items. The Item Bank has been abolished in Phantasy Star
Universe and item maintenance is now handled by the Partner Machinery.
You will be able to deposit items and withdraw them, just like you used
to at the Item Bank.

By giving your Partner Machinery
weapons and items, its stats will grow. It will transform into various
forms as it gains levels through stat growth. As your
Partner Machinery transforms, it will be able to create
better items. The items it produces can also change depending
on how it was raised. Once the Partner Machinery has transformed into its
humanoid form, it will present you with its partner card. You will now
be able to summon your Partner Machinery and take it with you into
battle.
As noted above, you will be able
to give items
to your Partner Machinery. In this screenshot Ethan is seen giving a
Gigush with 149 PP, 166 ATP, and 80 ATA to PETE. PETE has 0 POW, 0 DEX,
0 MIND, and 0 DEF here.
In these two screenshots, Ethan gives a Picque to PETE. This causes it
to gain +8 in the POW category and evolve into its humanoid form. The
Partner Machinery then gives Ethan its Partner Card so they can go into
battle together.

Using item synthesis, you will be
able to create a wide variety of items, including rare and expensive
weapons. Here is an overview of how the system will work. First, you
must find the "board" for the item you want to make and give it to your
Partner Machinery. You will be able to find boards while fighting or
by them from a specialty store. Next, you must gather the ingredients
necessary to make the item. Like boards, you can buy ingredients from
the store or find them while adventuring. After that, talk to your
Partner Machinery and ask it to make the desired item. Depending on the
level of your Partner Machinery and the item being made, there is a
chance the synthesis may fail. It is worth noting that you can
only synthesize a certain number of items for any given recipe. Also,
you can synthesize multiple items, such as 10 dimates, at one time.
As you progress through Story Mode,
you will eventually receive a "synthesis kit." This will allow your
Partner Machinery to combine and create new items for you. The items
your Partner Machinery is best at making will change as it
evolves. Also, you will be able to use item synthesis in
Network Mode.
In the first screenshot below, Ethan receives his Item Synthesis kit
from Lumia. Ethan puts this kit to use in the second screenshot. He is
seen trying to perform a 4 slot synthesis involving a Twin Power Gun,
Imu Photon, Keleserin, Hapotite, and Bal Epon. The chances of success
are 64%. PETE is quoted as saying, "If I fail at this synthesis, please
do not be angry with me."
