| Rare Enemies and the
Telepipe Trick |
| Introduction |
| Phantasy Star Online is a fairly deep game, all things considered. It
completely immerses its players in a fantastic, futuristic world of danger
and adventure. Hunting for items is one of the largest aspects of the
game. The better the items you find, the better prepared you'll be. Rare
enemies house some valuable items, and have better item drop rates than
any of the other enemies in the game. The complicated issue is finding
rare enemies in the first place.
This guide has been created to assist those who are in search of rare
enemies and the valuable items they possess. Using the information contained
herein will not increase a player's odds of finding a rare enemy or
receiving any item they may drop. However, this guide will give basic
ideas on where to search for rare enemies so players will at least have
more chances to find them.

|
| What is a rare enemy? |
| A rare enemy, as that title may imply, is generally not easy to find.
Randomly replacing a normal enemy counterpart, rare enemies can be found
in standard areas, quests, and even Challenge mode. There's nothing proven
to change the odds of finding rare enemies, but areas with more of a specific
enemy type will give more chances to find one. Difficulty doesn't matter
for finding rare enemies, but the difficulty does effect what the rare
enemies will drop. Rare enemies have the highest special item drop rates
when compared to other enemies. However, depending on the value of the
item the drop rate may vary substantially.
For more details on specific rare enemy types, view the Rare
Monsters guide.

Findings database.

| Hunting rare enemies: area runs |
| There are a couple methods available for finding rare enemies. The first
is simply running through areas or quests where rare enemies may randomly
appear. The chances of finding one reflect directly upon how many enemies
there are that can become a rare enemy. This method can be somewhat slow,
but the advantage is that a player will still be earning experience and
items while hunting that elusive rare enemy.
Following is a list of the best areas to look for rare enemies, based
upon enemy counts.
Episode I: Forest...
Al/Pal Rappy: the offline quest Fake
in Yellow (44 Rappies).
Hildeblue/Hildetorr: either the offline quest Forest
of Sorrow (16 Hildes) or the online quest Lost
Heat Sword (12 Hildes).
Episode I: Cave...
Nar/Mil Lily: the offline quest Addicting Food (62 Lilies)
or the online quest Lost
Ice Spinner (unknown count).
Pouilly Slime: the offline quest Addicting Food (13 Slimes,
split into 52 total) or the online quest Lost
Ice Spinner (unknown count).

| Hunting Rare Enemies: Telepipe Trick |
| The other method for finding rare enemies is referred to as the telepipe
(TP) trick. To make use of the TP trick simply locate an enemy that has
a rare counterpart. Obviously it is worthwhile to have more of that enemy
present while using the TP trick. Next set a telepipe and use it to go
back to Pioneer 2. After returning to Ragol through the telepipe, check
to see if there are any rare enemies. If there are none, repeat.
Why is this possible? Offline, all enemies reset when the player leaves
the area (goes into another area or returns to Pioneer 2). Enemies reset
because the game itself is not programmed to keep basic enemy information
in the RAM (normal/rare type, HP, and status changes). Thus by leaving
the area and returning an enemy will reset back to its default state.
If the enemy in question has a rare counterpart there's a chance that
it will change into that rare because its type is recalculated again.
Just keep in mind that this trick only works offline in both single-player
and multi-player mode. While online the PSO servers store most of the
basic enemy information so that everyone in a party will see the same
enemies.
Following is a list of the best areas to use the TP trick for rare
enemies, based upon enemy counts.
Episode I: Forest...
Al/Pal Rappy: the offline quest Fake
in Yellow (room with 8 Rappies).
Hildeblue/Hildetorr: either the offline quest Forest
of Sorrow (room with 4 Hildes) or the offline quest Letter
from Lionel (room with 3 Hildes).
Episode I: Cave...
Nar/Mil Lily: either the offline quest Addicting Food
(room with 6 Lilies) or the offline quest Waterfall Tears (room
with 9 Lilies).
Pouilly Slime: the offline quest Addicting Food (room
with 2 Slimes, split into 8 total)..

| Pofuilly Slimes |
| Slimes are unique among enemies because they have a tendancy to multiply.
However, these duplicates don't have to be exact copies. There is a small
chance that one of these duplicates may turn out to be a rare Pouilly
Slime, instead. An original slime and its duplicates can be multiplied
up to three times combined for a total of four slimes. However, if more
than one slime appears in an attack wave they can be multiplied each individually
up to three times. For example: if two slimes appear originally in the
room, each of them can be split three times for a total of eight slimes.
There's a couple of different ways to multiply slimes, as listed below.
Techniques: Some techniques cause slimes to immediately multiply.
Slimes are especially prone to multiplication from Gibarta and Rabarta.
Third attack of a combo: The third attack in any combo will
cause a slime to multiply. However, be aware that striking a slime with
either the first or second attack will cause it to retreat. A really
good method of attacking a slime so that the first two attacks won't
hit it are to use the special attack of an unidentified weapon (????weapon
or ?SPECIAL WEAPON). Typically the special attack will miss when a weapon
is unidentified. Droids can also use the special attack of any weapon
with the Spirit special (uses TP for extra damage), which will always
miss since they don't have any TP.
The telepipe trick is a useful method for hunting rare Pouilly Slimes.
Whenever the player leaves the area and then returns all the duplicate
slimes will have vanished. The original slimes reset and could possibly
become Pouilly Slimes. Most importantly is that the original slimes
can be split again each time they reset.

| Telepipe Trick: Fake in Yellow for Al Rappy or Pal
Rappy |
| Simply clear the necessary rooms to reach the target. At the goal room
there will be eight rappies in a single wave. The character should be
situated somewhat inside the door, up the slope against the right-hand
side wall. Facing the proper direction, all eight rappies can clearly
be seen without moving. However, in Ultimate difficulty a fat rappy in
certain locations will block the view of the rappies further behind. The
player can also opt to telepipe in the next room following that one. There's
two separate waves of seven rappies each, but they are much easier to
set up and see than the room with eight rappies. However, since there's
only seven rappies per wave it will likely take abit longer before a rare
rappy appears.

| Telepipe Trick: Forest of Sorrow for Hildeblue or
Hildetorr |
| First off be aware that the NPC Alicia Baz joins the player during this
quest (and can usually be a good distraction for enemies). Do not let Alicia
die or the quest will immediately end. Begin by going through Forest 1 and
reach Forest 2. Clear the necessary rooms to reach the target. Upon entering
the room there will be two hildes. Do not kill those hildes. Move to the
center of the room and another hilde will drop down. Kill this new hilde
and another one will drop in. Kill that one as well and two more hildes
will jump in. At this point the four hildes are the most that can be in
the room at one time. The best place to stand is just inside the doorway
facing southeast while standing against the little wall outcropping. If
positioned properly all four hildes should be clearly viewed upon returning
from Pioneer 2. Keep in mind that sometimes they'll attack quickly with
Foie or Zonde, depending on the difficulty. It is recommended to wear a
Cure/Shock unit while piping here in Ultimate difficulty. Alicia may cast
Resta, healing herself and the player, once she runs out of mates. Just
be aware that she has limited TP and fluids.

| Telepipe Trick: Letter from Lionel for Hildeblue
or Hildetorr |
| Begin by going through Forest 1 and reach Forest 2. Clear the necessary
rooms to reach the target. Upon entering the room there will be other
enemies to fight. Kill them off while working your way south. After a
few packs of wolves three hildes will finally drop into the room at the
southernmost point. Move north to avoid contact with them (leave the room
entirely if necessary). When ready, the location to stand and telepipe
is just slightly northeast of the doorway to the central island (west
of the current room). The player should be far enough away to avoid attracting
the hildes while still close enough to see them clearly.

|
| Telepipe Trick: Addicting Food for Nar Lily or Mil
Lily |
Begin by going through Cave 1 and reach Cave 2. Clear the necessary rooms
to reach the target. Upon entering the room there will be other enemies
to fight. Kill them off and six lilies will appear. The best position to
telepipe from is just in the doorway. Positioned correctly the camera should
easily see five of the lilies. Turning to the left will show the sixth lily
situated in the southwest corner of the room.
|
|
| Telepipe Trick: Waterfall Tears for Nar Lily or Mil
Lily |
| Begin by going through Cave 1 and reach Cave 2. Clear the necessary rooms
to reach the target. Upon entering the room five lilies will appear. Open
up the start or shortcut menu and run around the room just outside the lilies
to set off all the traps in the room. If the player moves over to the locked
door on the east side of the room another four lilies will appear, for a
total of nine. The safest place to telepipe from is in the open doorway.
However, this position does not give a very good view of all the lilies.
The best place to get a better view of all the lilies (a very dangerous
location in Ultimate difficulty) is on the west side of the room in front
of the area at the center of the wall where a door could be.
|
|
| Telepipe Trick: Addicting Food for Pouilly Slime |
| Begin by going through Cave 1 and reach Cave 2. Clear the necessary
rooms to reach the target. Upon entering the room there will be other
enemies to fight. Kill them off. A wave of five sharks will appear. Defeat
them. Finally two slimes should appear. Set a telepipe in the center of
the room. Don't forget to split the slimes before returning to Pioneer
2. Avoid killing any of the slimes, or letting the slimes kill themselves.
