• Sega Ranks Number Six in 2010 List of World's Top 100 Developers

Develop 100 has released their 2010 list of the world's top 100 most successful game development studios. The list, which ranks studios by key UK sales data, was topped this year by Nintendo and Infinity Ward. Also making a top-ten appearance was Sega Japan, ranking in at #6, just in front of #7 Capcom. So, which title attributed to Sega's success in this year's rankings? Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, which had sold 5.6 million copies by the end of 2009.

In an interesting twist, the studio ranking in just above Sega in the list, Foundation 9, was the developer behind Sega Superstars Tennis and Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing (as well as numerous other Sega-published titles).

In Develop 100's profile of Sega, they mentioned that, despite its high ranking, the company is enjoying more success as a publisher, noting titles like Bayonetta and upcoming Alpha Protocol. It should be interesting to see how the rest of 2010 pans out for Sega as it continues to reorganize its operations and focus more on digital distribution.

To see the entire list of top 100 developers, head on over to Develop 100.

Yeah, that's some good additional info. Sega, as a publisher, has definitely been putting out some popular titles recently. If this were a top 100 list of publishers, Nintendo, Activision and EA would likely be up at the top, but I imagine Sega would still be in the top 10, or close.

You also have to take this in consideration the whole list probably doesnt take in account of the number of the publisher's games in their consoles for periods of time. If it were measured including frequency Games were played or often in console/device, Capcom would be further up, but still just below Sega's with their numerous high replay value games, like the Phantasy Star Series, Sonic series, and Capcom's Monster Hunter series (never leaves my PSP except for PhaStaPor) and Konami's goldenchild, Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops/Peace Walker. When it comes to Japan's numbers, the top 3 games most played on the PSP in japan is of course Phantasy Star Portable 2, Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, and Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker
