Lose the items but not a charge on the board.

You can just turn off your xbox (if on xbox) if you fail the synth and then you can do it over again...

That won't do anything, unless you're offline... And it works for all three platforms (save before synth, reload after synth if you don't like the results).

Actually it's a bug that some people use. The result is that you loose the materials (like you would if the synth failed) but you keep the charge. Some people swear by it, others call it cheating. It's up to you to decide, personally I don't use it.
