Losing your character: Proecting Yourself

A friend of mine just lost his character to a VMU going all wacky and he lost a lot of rare items. My question is this: what can one do to protect themself losing all their rare items, or what can you do to minimize the impact of losing a VMU save?

Use the DC web browser and send an email with the two PSO files as attachments everytime before you go online (if that's too much of a hassle, you could just do it once in a while when you have good items, etc.)

Interestingly, you can also cheat the game with this method (without having to use GameShark CDX). Just send yourself the PSO files, then go online and give your friends all your money, items, etc. Delete your now moneyless/itemless character and load up your backup character and ask your friends to give your items back. Double everything you have.

This is still a cheat, I have not done it and will not do it, so don't flame me about cheating. It's a cheat, but I don't think it is on the same level of wrongness as using the GS CDX.
