Stixx's guide to hunting Dark Heart

First thing's first: You're going to be hunting in the HIVE. The HIVE is accessed through the fourth floor of the Guardian's Colony. It doesn't matter what difficulty you choose to hunt on, as the Darbelan's will drop the Black Heart on all difficulties (You get the added bonus of a chance at a Te/Tech PP Save unit on S rank difficulty). I personally got my Dark Heart on C rank, meaning level 10 enemies.

Now, onto how to hunt Darbelans. I guess the first thing you would want to know is what a Darbelan looks like. Well, here it is:

These guys will appear on only three (3) variations of the HIVE. There are a total of twelve (12) map variations including enemy spawn variations. This seems to confuse alot of people, so let me break it down. Basically, there are three (3) different 'routes' of the HIVE. From now on, these 'routes' will be mentioned as A, B, and C. Each route has four (4) enemy spawn variations, meaning that If you get route A there are four (4) different patterns in which enemies can appear. This is illustrated in the following chart. As you see here, there are routes A, B, and C along with each individual spawn pattern as shown by A-1, A-2, A-3, A-X, B-1, etc.

The maps you are looking for are A-X, B-X, and C-X. Each of these map variations result in four (4) Darbelans spawning.

Now then, onto the details. I'm going to start by explaining what to look for for each rare 'route' (i.e. A-X, B-X, and C-X).

PART ONE - A-X

-Block 1

Basically, in Block 1 you are looking for Delsabans to spawn. You will get either a group of four Pannons or a group of three Delsabans. YOU WANT THE DELSABANS.

Don't get excited yet though, because as you can see (referencing the chart) route A has three different spawn variations that start with Delsabans. If you look at the chart, you will also notice that below the Delsaban there are notes reading (large: Jusnagun) or (large: Dilnazen) or (large: SEED Vance). This means that if you get that particular spawn variation, that particular species of "large" monster will show up throughout that entire block. As you can see, A-X requires you to not only get Delsabans but Dilnazen as well. The large monsters for route A don't show up until you clear the first room and go into the small room to the south (to the right as you enter the room).

After you confirm that you get Delsabans as your first spawn and that you get Dilnazen in the little room, you are ready to move on to block 2. Clear the way as fast as you can. Trust me, you'll memorize where every monster spawns. As a Figunner I just bring along a pair of twin handguns and everything goes down in a volley of shots (large monsters take a few volleys).

-Block 2

This is much simpler than Block 1. When you walk into Block 2 this is what you want to see:

Notice there are three (3) pannon, not five. If you get five pannon you got a bad map and you need to restart. Feel free to play through the rest of the mission, but don't expect to see any Darbelans. If you see three (3) pannon you are homefree and expect to see four of those giant Darbelan in Block 3...hopefully they drop a Black Heart for you http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif

-Block 3

If you do get a rare map (A-X, B-X, or C-X) Block 3 will be the same no matter what. I'm only going to explain Block 3 in the A-X section, so don't expect to see it again later. When you walk into Block 3, you will see four (4) Delsabans.

After killing these, four (4) Sendillian will spawn.

After they die, take the right fork up past the photon cube and enter the room. You will meet your first two Darbelan!

Kill 'em, hopefully pick up a shiney Black Heart, and continue to clear out the block. As you go, you will run into two more Darbelan.

PART TWO - B-X

-Block 1

When you start off in route B this is what you want to see:

Notice there are two (2) Delsaban and Pannon. If you get this spawn, continue onto Block 2. If not, restart and try again.

-Block 2

When you run into Block 2, the first spawn will be three (3) Delsaban.

After you kill them, a few more will spawn along with a few Sendillian. After the Sendillian die, the first large monster in the block will spawn. If it's the rare B-X map, a winged Jusnagun will spawn. If a tall green Dinazen spawns, you got a bad map. Here's some pictures to help you:

After you get a Jusnagun to spawn (and kill it), continue on to Block 3 and your four Darbelans.

PART THREE - C-X

-Block 1

This seems to be the most...common rare map. When you walk in, you want to see three (3) pannon as shown below.

If you get three (3) pannon, continue on to block two. If not, restart and try again.

-Block 2

In Block 2, you want to see three (3) pannon as shown below.

If you see the three (3) pannon, congratulations. Continue on to Block 3 and kill those Darbelans.

Personally I think A-X is the hardest to get because 3x Delsaban in Block 1 could mean A-1, A-3 or A-X.

I think I have done Block 1 of the A-variation almost triple the other two combined.

Sadly, it doesn't make you immune to megid. It increases your END by 2 though, which helps resist the instant death part I believe.

I hunted it for six hours total so far. 3 one night, 3 the next morning. The first night, I saw 12 darbelans. I got 2 copernia out of the deal. The next day I didn't see a single one. I also had 0 luck the first night. If you don't want your "cruddy copernia" please, I'll take it off your hands. I need that stuff for synthing. :/

Seven - yes seven - Phantom Rifle synth attempts at 49% success rate and all have failed. I am cursed.

A month of running Relics looking for those lovely rappies that dropped me Christmas Trees two months ago and that lovely pink boss that dropped a Svaltus Edge and a Relics Edge two months ago and .... nothing. I am most definitely cursed.

Trying to grind up some b weapons past level 6 today with level 3 luck on my hunter and some +8 grinders - all, as in 10 weapons, all failed. I am really fricking, as in by Davey Jones, cursed.

My friend got a Black Heart on his first hour of running the stupid quest and showed it to me. We went into Linear Line so he could play catch with the megid flippers. On about the sixth toss, they killed him. And again on the ninth toss. And again on the 12th toss.

Meh - I checked the shops (xbox 360) and these people were selling this item for 1 to 3 million - c'mon. It aint worth it. Of course, someone has a Degahana Cannon for sale for 4 million. O really....I stick with my crappy Maser Cannon thank you very much.

Rant over - back to hunting pink rappies tonight.

This may be my superstition, but i think I got more instances of the rare map, when I wasn't on the crowded server (uni2). I just did a C rank mission and got the rare spawn that does NOT correspond to the guide. The block one config was completely different.

It is the map where is one very long room, followed by a northern exit and a souther exit. The key for the norther exit drops in the southern room. From that northern room, there is a single exit to the east. The rest of block on consists of three small rooms, on to the south east, and 2 to the north (east and west). The exit to block 2 lies in the west room.

the deljarbans appeared in block 3, in the room adjacent to the PP recharge room.

The worst part is, I didn't write down the enemy spawns, thinking this was jsut a ho-hum regular run!

Luck 2 day, male beast figunner (not that anyof these things make any difference as far as we know).

i did 6 hours of runs and i found the Darbelans two times, but they always dropped me meseta, once i also got a monomate and a C sword.

I did all the runs in C difficulty, are you sure that chances of better drops don't increase with a higher level of the mission? perhaps A or S?

Been at this for a total of 17 hours (not much to some item hunters out there i guess...) but its long enough for someone like me. Not one rare map, meaning I haven't even seen a darbelan. I would say screw it because the item isnt that great, but I've spent so long looking for this if i stop now... itd be dumb. Gah. Now I know how those rappy hunters feel.

Excellent guide btw, can't imagine how much extra trouble I'd have gone through/will go through, without this helping me.

I just want to add my findings, unless anyone else has noticed.

If you get a 'B' map variation (the one where you need 2x Pannon and 2x Delsaban in Block 1), there is a way to tell very quickly in Block 2 if you have a B-X map.

Run upto the Block 2 spawn (which will be 3x Delsaban), and kill ONE. Do not kill the whole group. When you kill one of them, watch the room.

- If a Delsaban spawns straight after killing one of the starting 3, you have a X map.
- If no Delsaban spawns, kill the rest, and you'll see one spawn. This is a indicator for a bad map. You don't even need to see the large enemy spawn.

In a normal (bad) map, the Sendillian after the Delsabans will spawn one after the other (i.e you kill one, and another spawns). In a good map, none will spawn until after they are all dead. However, you shouldn't need to see this in a 'bad' map, as you can tell it's bad by the Delsaban spawn, and abandon.

I've tested this over and over again, and everytime the 4th Delsaban spawns AFTER all 3 are dead, it'll be a Dilnazen map (bad).

If you run in, kill one, and another spawns, you will get a Jusnagun, which is good, and will give you a Darbelan map.

It doesn't save much time, but when you're running this for hours, it helps. Hopefully it'll help someone out.

For the record, I'm on 40 Darbelans now, no Black Heart yet.

Does the item box for Black Heart look the same as other 7*+ items? The last rare map I got 2 Darbelans dropped Olpads and 1 dropped Copernia. I about had a heart attack each time those dropped thinking it was a Black Heart XD.

Err, can someone please verify the chart of the OP? On PSUPedia it says that for A-X Delsaban x3 + Delsaban x2 (large: dilnazen), but on the OP's chart it only says Delsaban x3 (large: dilnazen).

The only A variations I ever saw were for 3 followed by 2, and I kept abandoning every time because I thought it was the wrong one.

The OP only listed the spawns that matter. On that map, you either get 3 Delsabans first or 5 Pannons first. What spawns after them doesn't matter, except for the large enemy (which should be a Dilnazen). I get that map all the time, there are always 3 + 2 Delsabans and 4 + 3 Sendillians (I think that was the number) regardless of whether the large enemy is a Dilnazen or Jusnagun. You have to get to the first large enemy to know which map you have.

So far I haven't seen a single rare spawn since Holy Light started, and out of over 100 tries on various maps have never seen the rare routes before, and can't find any exp groups to get to 35. Whatta waste of a week this is going to be. >_<

I have a hard time just getting the Darbelans to show up. I seem to get them in about 1 in 100 runs. The most I've gotten is two spawns in one day. Me too I had 2 spawns today and I sorta gave up...

Is it just my imagination or is this 3* luck hurting the black heart drop chances? Since the black heart is only a 6* B rank item and the other items are higher star rates, wouldn't it have an even harder time dropping? Just my thoughts but could be way off lol.

Well, HIVE on C is actually super easy for a low char. My Force was level 15 when I brought him there, using 5* Rods. With Leo and his GH432, they tear through the enemies, and it's decent exp. The mini-boss type enemies give a ton of exp, and the rest dies so quickly it's good exp.


edit: er, forgot to add my point, which is that it's not boring because I'm leveling up a char there anyway.

My brother and I share an account ($5 a month each). He didn't even know about the black heart until 2 weeks ago. I had the chart printed out in a binder. He starts using it and on his 50th attempt...he gets a rare map...and 450 or so meseta...and a F---ing black heart. He's selling it in his shop right now. My main char is lvl 37...His is lvl 17. He is about to have more money than I ever have (he could probably buy everything I have twice over).

it should also be noted that the black heart is an elusive unit. whil eyou may get luck and get it on your first try it could also take hundreds of times killing the rare spawns to get just one of them. just don't go in expecting to get a BH just because you get the rare map.

For the A-X variation, can you cancel any map in which 2 additional delsaban spawn after the first 3 to have a 100% chance of getting the darbelan (i.e., you don't need to check the second block)?

Actually, yes, they can and have changed some spawn charts in the past. It's a valid inquiry.

To answer the original question, these charts should still be correct. I don't believe that any HIVE missions have had charts adjusted, and they weren't included in that mission "rebalance" way back in the day.

I've so far had a single Darbelan map out of about 100, and my brother is doing it next to me on his character too (he has yet to see any).

Is it possible to chances to get a rare map could have been adjusted, has this been known to happen?

Does having any Photon Fortune increase your chance to get a rare map?
