View Full Version : Moderator Prerequisits? (Just curious)

So, what's required to be a moderator? Do you need to be proficient in web site maintenance/design? Or just a stand up guy/gal?

Just wondering. I never get to ask these kinds of questions, and it's been gnawing at me for a while.

There are no 'pre-requisites' other than being what the current staff are looking for in a new mod. Thus the saying "We call you."

The first thing that needs to happen, is we need to have a need for another moderator. You'll find that this is emphasized every time the subject is brought up.

Assuming that prerequisite is already present, we usually look for someone that's, well, as you put it, a stand up guy or gal. We typically look for someone who's cool-headed and has demonstrated that they know, and abide by, the rules. Having a love for PSO-World is also a plus. It's also very important that any potential candidate be very active in the forum(s) in which we need additional moderation.

That's pretty much it. If your behavior stands out over a fairly good stretch of time, then there's a reasonable chance that you'll be approached concerning a position among the staff.

There are rituals, so we can only get mods when we find a decent supply of blood and sacrifices.

Mods also prefer bananas as bribes over cookies for some reason.

Don't forget about the cheap gin, beat up Chevrolet Cheyanne pick-ups from the late 70's (preferably brown), dilled paddles, nylon ropes and blindfolds.

Every time we get a new mod, the hazing ritual takes longer.

OK, simple answer, mods are humans too.

I'm pretty sure that was only for you, wasn't it? Mine was blue, and only Abdur wanted anything involving lace.

But yes, most of us are human. As a normal here I just did what most members do: post in a few forums (on topic in serious topics), use the mod alert when necessary, and helped the site a bit (created some guides and stickies).
I was surprised when I received notice I was being considered as a mod.

We can warn you, we can ban you, we can edit your posts, change your signature or take it away entirely, we can take away your title if you abuse that, we can suspend you from the forum, change your polls, move and merge your topics (as Dhylec seems to have demonstrated for you), lock your topics, call lightning from the sky, and some of us have various responsibilities concerning the site's other content.

Moderator Prerequisits? (Just curious)

That's what they all say http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

call lightning from the sky

Do you need any reagents on hand or is it purely a force of will thing?

For being humans, we can create quite spectacular simulation with a some help & few clicks. For gods, demi-gods/non-humans, thoughts are merely enough to call on lightnings.

Our connections at Sega scored us some Zonde technique discs. We've all got it at level 15, now.

Interesting. So um...uh...erm...w-where do you insert them?

If I explained that, then someone could replicate the technology, and Sega would be very upset with me.

In my case, I used to thrive on others' reactions to my fan fiction. That's probably what's kept me here for so long.

Shortly before I was "officially" approached, geewj tipped me off that I should let someone know I was interested in a position as a staff member, here. I had observed that Fan Works had no dedicated moderator (granted, Fan Works really doesn't need a lot of moderation), and being rather proud to have been a member for as long as I had been, I was rather eager to fill that void. So after geewj suggested it to me, I PMed Tomeeboy about the subject, and got an IM from Ryna over AIM just a few minutes later; these events were independent of eachother, mind you.

When Ryna asked me if I would like to operate as a staff member, the answer was an unhesitant "YES", perhaps with a "lol" and a mention that I had just PMed Tomeeboy about it a few minutes prior.

So, for me, at least, that's what it was like to be, as you say, "chosen."

Right at the end of the "Who's Online" list at the bottom of any forum topic list or forum index. It's a link that says, "PM Active Moderators".
