View Full Version : Who do you think is allowed to use swords?

Every main character uses swords. It's gotten to a point where's taboo not to use swords. But still, there are characters who surprise me by actually looking pretty decent with a sword. Are there any of such characters for other people?

Sword users why I approve of are Vyse (main character of Skies of Arcadia) and Guts (From berserk). There are probably others which do not come to mind.

In a world filled with wannabes with big swords, who in your mind has the right to wield them?

Link is great, Vicious is pretty righteous, Squall was decent (even though his was half gun, which I still laugh about... half gun, half sword. Best nonsense weapon/sexual innuendo ever), and, of course, Beatrix of Kill Bill was amazing.

"Sword" is kind of a broad term. Really, some characters look better with certain types of 'swords' than others.

A good example, would be Cloud. With huge swords, like his Buster Sword, and the like, it looks right... Whereas, if you get the Murasame from Wutai, it just looks weird to have him using a Japanese-style sword.

Another good example... Link looks just right, when using the Master Sword and a Hylian Shield. Ever seen him using a lightsaber (no, not Beam Sword)? It really, really does not look right.

"A sword" can really look right on a myriad of different characters. The issue, however, is finding the right style and design of a sword, that works well in conjunction with all of the attributes of the character.

Alis Fucking Landale, bitches. Cute girl in pink, with a sword? Yes please. Extra points for her not being an airhead, or completely dependent on big strong men to rescue her.

(I should probably warn you that the first file is about 650K, heh.)

actually, there actually was such a thing as a sword similar to what Squall used. it was a Japanese infantry weapon in WWII, I have a book that has a picture of it that I can scan later today or something. anyway, I think that alot of the people who were mentioned are good enough to use swords. I would also like to say Kambei from 7 Samurai, both the anime and the 1954 films, as well as the other 6 samurai are cool enough to use swords, especially Kyuzo.

I completely agree. Though I'm not as much of a fanatic of her as I am of the newmen due to her being a stereotype hero, she is perhaps the best stereotype hero I've seen, as well as one of the first.

I also agree that Link looks good with a sword too, if only because he's one of the few heros that actually have the knight look (this may be why I like Alis as well) and pull it off well. This may just be fanboyism speaking, though.

As for Squall, I'm not at all a fan of the gunblade. I had to stop myself from laughing when I saw it. I'd be very surprised if the japanese actually had something similar to that.

Whether or not it would be an effective weapon doesn't really matter to me, actually. I like the gunblade because it's got the old west sixshooter aspect to it.

IMO, ninja/warriors of any kind.

Link is one of a kind.

Actually your sig reminds me that both Hajime Saito and Shinomori Aoshi just belong and fit right with swordsmanship.

There's a stereotype for young girls who go on quests of revenge and manage to do it all without turning into bitter macho bitches? XD (Yeah, Karen, talking to you.) I can think of a couple of characters in RPGs I'd compare to Alis, but she did it first. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

I like Alis more than Nei, but it could be that Nei is so wildly popular that she starts feeling overhyped. XP

well, in Naruto, Sasuke starts to use a sword, and IMO, he's totally not worthy of using one, its too long for him to slit his wrists with. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif

Yeah, see, I never got to see much of Nei, which is probably why I liked her so much. Where was she hyped, anyway?

Ah, shame I missed it. I haven't been able to become a rabid fanboy yet.
