CompUSA is supposedly closing over half of their stores. They have 225 stores now and their website lists only 103. It is apparently affecting mostly stores in the western half of the United States.

CompUSA's website has the list of what stores will be staying open under Locations > Stores.

The one closest to me isn't listed on the site anymore; a shame.

Too bad, I didn't mind CompUSA. Looks like all the WA stores will be closing except for Spokane.

Would this have anything to do with Fry's Electronics being the larger store of PC stuff in the west?

Even then, the one here in Vegas looks open still.

I think it's a combination of things. More stores competing in the same markets (Best Buy, Circuit City and to some extent even places like Costco, Wal Mart etc.) Also the online retailers have really gained alot of ground. Places like Newegg, Tigerdirect and Zipzoomfly have definitely made a dent in CompUSA's sales.

Looks like we're losing the one in Modesto. Shame. They had a prominent Mac section and all the Windows PCs had this nifty goldfish screensaver on them.

Guess you'll have to go to Fresno to see the goldfish now, Ian.

I can't say that CompUSA has played a big part in my life. What I do know, is that when Windows 95 and 98 were the gaping holes of insecurity to physical access that they were, CompUSAs were amazingly prone to having pranks pulled on them. The old Inappropriately-named-folder-on-the-desktop-starting-with-a-0255-character-so-Windows-can't-delete-it scheme worked rather well in those days.

Nothing like a folder named "HORSE PORN" in the middle of the desktop on a display machine that no one can delete to inspire nervous sweat.

They are overpriced and their service is sub-par. I'm glad they're going, perhaps this will make their corporate HQ pull their heads out of their keister and realize that selling everything for 20% higher than the store next door is foolish.

Eh, still, they were a good store when they started out. I will miss them, after a fashion, much like you miss your first car, even thought it was a huge hunk of junk. Good memories.

I wonder who'll take their place...
