View Full Version : Back in the days of the N64

Not sure if has come up already, but has anyone ever figured out what the slot on the bottom of the N64 is used for?

You talkin about this?
http://darkwatcher.psxfanatics.com/console/n64pack.jpg
Like the pack says its the N64 expansion pack. Pretty much its a small upgrade to the N64's processing power. There were some games that REQUIRED it for you to play them, like Donkey Kong 64.
Great Fucking Game.

MetaZedlen
Mar 17, 2007, 10:53 AM
No, not that, if you flip the console over there is a slot with a cover on it and it looks like it can have the games inserted in it, but it is slightly smaller than the game.
P.S. I do own an expansion pack.

That was for the 64DD, a disk drive add-on. I wanted one for the F-Zero X track editor program. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif

Great Fucking Game/marketing.

You couldn't do hardly anything without that friggin' pack. $100 total back when you wanted the full experience. Nowadays they're a $2 plastic paperweight on eBay. Perfect Dark like $10 since they made plenty of copies to go around.

Picked up a N64 console that the seller didn't even mention had the expansion pack installed, thus I ended up buying another one in a different auction by not knowing this!

And yeah, that 64DD add-on thing never came stateside and Nintendo systems always have the extra ports that usually go unused.

Diz, DK64 was THE SHIT. I got, like, EVERYTHING in that game. (Because I thought all 200 bananas got you the Nintendo Coin...I didn't want to look it up >.>)

It was also used for Perfect Dark. AN EXPONENTIALLY BETTER STILL GAME.

God, N64 games kicked so much ass. Too bad Rare sucks now >.>

How can you mention Rare and the N64 and leave out Conker's Bad Fur Day?

Majora's Mask needed the Expansion thing too

Am I the only one who not only thought the N64 had very few games, but thoughts Rare's games on it were TERRIBLE? Banjo series and Donkey, they were like, the same game, and terrible.

Perfect Dark was good, just not DK.

N64 had the Link games, and Kirby going for it. The best damn Kirby game ever.

nurnurnur... the days of banjokazooie/tooie, and StarFox64.

Let's just say it was back in the day there was something for everyone, as opposed to the cube which is aimed at a more... niche audience.

I only have the expansion because it was bundled with DK64. Like. Well. Back then, if the game came with a free accessory, it was usually worth the buy. SF64 Rumble pak, too. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

N64... man, those were the days.

OOT, Majora's MAsk (my favourite Zelda game EVER), Starfox 64, Goldeneye, Spacestation: Silicon Valley, Banjo Kazooie, Mischief Makers...

I miss my N64 so goddamn much T_T

my brother sold the N64 and all our games for a PS1 (tiny version). I have a N64, but only one game, and a broken controller.

Oh! MM!

Ugh, how could I forget my favorite Zelda game of all time?!

And Banjo, too...Oh well, sad to see that none of the titles that made the N64 continued, except for Zelda of course http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

The final fight in Mischief Makers was pretty interesting.

That game, like almost all Treasure games, is made almost entirely of awesome and pwn. The rest is made of computer data.

BFD was alright, the frame rate licked my balls though. I'm seriously considering overclocking my 64 so I can play that game right.

And what's with this Majora's Mask love? Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, and Adventure of Link are all ghey.

I hope they bring Mischief Makers to the Virtual Console. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

It's good to see support for Majora's Mask. I thought it was better than Ocarina as well, but just about everyone I've ever talked to about it said it was terrible in comparison.

Yeah, I'll bring my controller, aka Teh Claw, it's still like new since I never let anyone touch it. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif We need to get up on some Smash Bros., Perfect Dark, Mario Party, Mario Kart, and F-Zero.

I don't think ANYONE can argue that Smash Bros 1 is better than Melee.

It just really isn't.

(And I wish instead of bringing back DK's or Yoshi's stage in melee, they brought back, I dunno, Links stage, or Marios RIDICULOUSLY small stage)

How can it lag if you can't play it online, oh wait, you're one of the many, many retards who refer to slowdown as lag. I don't remember any slowdown on Smash Bros. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_confused.gif

Believe it or not, lag is a widely used English word, not just jargon. (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Lag) Sorry that I don't live up to Billy Pendantic's expectations.

Anyway, play the game again, and see how much slower (and more inconsistent) it is than Melee.

I second that, I really wish Link's stage from the original had been in Melee.

And yes, Melee is better than the original. The original is still an excellent game, though.

I had the same bundle. The console was such a pretty green. =3 DK64 was awesome, too. There was so many things to do and the levels were awesomely designed. And, back then, you actually needed the other characters all brought something very different to the table. Differentiation between the abilities of characters have been few and far between in the games I've been playing lately. They're all just re-hashed abilities of every other character in the game. >.>

It would work perfectly for the game. If they re-tooled it to work with the Wiimote, you could play the game with one hand, easily.

Such fandom, I'm not alone.

Something that was beautiful about the N64 was that they didn't have to have an entire team get overpaid to make a game's graphics and special effects look masterful. They couldn't fit it all on there anyways, so they got creative with the way it looked, sometimes even a little cheap, and then they put a substantial effort into making a game fun.

Now games are starting to suck, they're overstimulating, and just aren't the good simple fun they used to be. Naturally there's exceptions, but it certainly feels like a decline in gaming to me.
