Please can anybody help me out?

I just got a used copy of PSU for the PS2. My PS2 is a model SCPH-30003R, and I'm using two PS1 Dualshock pads. I have an official PS2 memory card with enough free space.

The problem is that when I load PSU it gets to the screen where you have to select between 50Hz/60Hz. At this point I cannot move the selection to either, and pressing any button does nothing - as if the pad is not connected. The pads work fine with all my other PS2 games and the red analog light even comes on while at the 50hz/60hz screen. However as I cannot select any option, I am unable to start the game! :/

The disk has a few small marks on it, but it seems to be more of a controller problem maybe? Any ideas?

Thanks for any help.

Edit: I should add that I'm using a PAL PS2 and a PAL copy of PSU.

Just a quick note in case anyone else has this problem.

It can be resolved by using an official Sony dual-shock 2 controller. Seems PAL PSU is rather picky http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif
