Cartoons:

Cartoons. As great as some animes are, it's much easier to get into a good cartoon then it is to hop on board an anime.

I prefer anime.
As much as i like cartoons, IMO Simpsons could be better. Ctoon Network is great, old cartoons are the best.
But anime is new and exciting. So much prettier.
Plus Anime is nice because 9/10 times it is not on tv, while cartoons are on everyday.
And Dr, Just got both Volumes of Rurouni Kenshin, almost thru with vol 1 XD Glad ya chose those gifs, Kenshin is among the best there is

Anime is just cartoons.

If you're asking weither or not I like western animated drama and comedy more than eastern, then yes - on the whole, I like western animation better. Eastern animation tends to do more drama and more adult material - such as Hellsing, Ghost in the Shell, Elfen Lied, Cowboy Bebop, ect which I enjoy. Western animation doesn't do as well here - with a few exceptions, like SPAWN, Heavy Metal, or that one Riddick cartoon. Pirates of Dark Water kicked ass as well, even though it wasn't really adult oriented.

In the Comedy department, I like western animation a lot more. While FMP:FUMOFU, Mahoromatic, FLCL, Ippatu Kikimusame, ect, are all very good - they just can't stand up to the awesomeness of Futurama, Family Guy, Drawn Together, Sealab 2021, ATHF (on ocassion), and expecially South Park.

I'm quite an anime lover, although there are some good western cartoons, like Family Guy, American Dad, Transformers, and Thunder Cats. There are a few good 100+ episode anime like Naruto, Bleach, and Fist of the North Star, but I do love the 26 ep stuff the best, like someone else posted earlier. Hell, there are also 13 ep stuff too, and OVAs that are even shorter.

Moo2u

I want anime lovers to back their vote up, damn it!

My choice heavily depends on what I'm in the mood for. I'd never look to Western cartoons for more mature or sophisticated stories and characters, and that's why I like anime. Likewise, no anime can compare to The Simpsons, Family Guy, or Futurama when it comes to comedy.

Depends on what I'm in the mood for. Some laughs results in me turning on something like the Simpsons. If I'm in the mood for something with an actual plot and development, I'd go with anime. Of course, there are cartoons and anime that try to go in the other direction than their norm, but those are far and inbetween (and not exactly good more often than not imo)

Solstis
Apr 4, 2007, 04:14 AM
I propose that Futurama is actually pretty dark and sophisticated (the episode with the dog or the one with the clover, for example).

Japanese animation is generally just good at making you feel cool for watching it. Like: "That animation sequence was so awesome! Awesome people watch awesome things! I am awesome!" I fall for this all the time. It's cool.

Why do people like FLCL? It was like some weird parody of Western pop culture/Eastern anime, and not a very good one at that. Really neat the first time I saw it, but it's unredeemably stupid most of the time. And not even smart stupid. Dumb stupid.

I'm on the fence.
Even though there are a lot of crap animes out there, when you do find a good anime it pays off.
Western cartoons on the other hand, they just aren't that memorable to me, these days at least.
I liked back in the day when Cartoon Network would play Looney Toons and Stven Spielberg cartoons, now those were some quality western cartoons.

Anime gives me headaches. Too much jumping around and bright lights. Some are good, if they don't get too crazy...

Cartoons rule. Nothing beats a good old funny cartoon on a boring day. Mindless humor > storyline, at least normally. Futurama, Family Guy, American Dad, etc. FTW.

I used to be a big anime fan up until my second year of college. I think the fanbase killed it for me. Plus the stuff that the club showed at my college was the same tired out crap. They seemed to have a fascination with that cutesy girly crap that I really couldn't get into. Sure, they would show something interesting once in a while, but a lot the times I (along with three other of my friends), would sit in the back and just make fun of what we saw (although that can make anything more enjoyable...from bad movies to the horror that is HD porn which if you haven't seen...don't...there are just things we shouldn't see).

And most of the newer anime I seen doesn't really attract me. I think Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni was the last series I saw that I really liked.

To be honest, while there is some anime will stand out completely above the rest (Miyazaki and Ghibli's stuff in general, FLCL, etc), I feel most of the stuff, will never compare to the stuff I grew up watching, like the old Looney Tunes cartoons, Tom and Jerry, Tex Avery's ingenius work with both WB and MGM (good old Droopy), Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, Ren and Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life. Plus, stuff like Invader Zim, South Park, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Sea Lab 2021, Harvey Birdman, Family Guy, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, The Brak Show, Robot Chicken, and Futurama are some really great shows that caught my interest more than what I seen in anime lately.

Anime for drama and action (GitS, Blood+, Bebop, Gatchaman), cartoons for comedy (ATHF, Family Guy, South Park, Drawn Together).

Six of one, half a dozen of the other. The only one that bucks the trend is Shin-Chan, which is a comedy...

Live action is unequivocally the best. Would you rather watch Star Trek TOS or Star Trek TAS? Or for you Star Wars fans would you rather watch the Clone Wars cartoons or the Star Wars movies?

But if I have to choose I'll go with cartoons. There are some good animes out there but they are hard to come by. As for cartoons I liked the old Saturday morning cartoons I use to watch like Garfield and all the videogame shows Zelda, Mario and Sonic.

Still I'm surprised that on a web site like this more people wouldn't choose anime.

Of course cartoons are better. Let alone individuals style, however, both styles of animation are in quite a shit hole at the moment. 93% of anime is cliche garbage that wapanese kids love, ' serious drama' my ass. Cartoons themselves aren't doing very well at the moment either though, with all that mediocre crap that's almost based of anime style, or just plains sucks. However comparing both, theres no question. Western cartoons for lyfe.

See, here's the problem with this thread. There's so much crap on either side of the argument it's a really hard choice. It's like the 2000 election, George Bush vs. Al Gore. Let's choose the one that'll fuck up our country the least, right?

But since these genres DO have strong points (by points I mean short series or movies as previously desscribed) why not separate and compare said points instead of lumping it together with the garbage?

I personally prefer anime, as the art style is pleasing (to me), and they tend to have a certain level of depth that wester cartoons tend to lack, sure I'll watch Family Guy or Futurama, but they put on Trigun or Eureka Seven and I'm there!

Also as far as anime go, it's usually the shorter run anime that are the best such as FLCL (6 eps), Air (12 eps + recap), Genshiken (12 eps), generally if they stay in the 26-50 or so range they'll be fine, it's the ones that drag on forever that you worry about =

I think that both sides have their good sides and their bad sides. American cartoons can be very original and very interesting. However, Japanese anime can be just sublime, with brilliant animation and thought-provoking stories.

They influence each other, so its hard to choose one. Anime can be clichéd garbagem just as much as american cartoons can be. So it's hard to choose one! i love them both, and they both have their purpose. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif

The director stated that was an anime made for adults in the vein of Japanese soap operas and prime time spots that competed against it; and that it took a long time to make!

Also stated that voice acting for Samurai Champloo was intended to not be like most anime with over the top expressions and cliche' stuff like staring blankly after saying a character's name and it was patterned after more normal conversation and speech patterns.

So I'd rather have that kinda stuff in anime, shorter series, not super short like 6 episodes or superlong such as 50-100+ episodes with "fillers."

But enjoyed plenty of Simpsons, Futurama, Family Guy in the past although when you know most of the jokes repeats can get stale fast.

Western media has lasted much longer than most all anime in terms of Hanna Barbera/Tex Avery stuff. Those won't ever go away completely I'd say. And matching it isn't a goal either since during times where they're forcing it, people know right away things are nearly copying the anime style and are turned off by it.

If it wasn't for "Gatchaman", Go Nagai's art,
" Macross ", and the art & Films of Hiyao Miyazaki I would not still admire or watch anime.

Both western Cartoons and Anime do have their share of horrible garbage. IMO Some of the crappiest cartoons being some of junk cartoons spewed out in the early to mid '80's.

It's sad that (it seems like) practically no one appreciates *good* Anime series like Ghost in the Shell:Stand Alone Complex, Wolf's Rain, Paranoia Agent, Last Exile, Trinity Blood, Blood+.

But too many watch the simple formulaic(sp?) cliched junk and have the impression that "most" or
"all" anime is like Naruto/DBZ/One-Piece/Pokemon, etc.

Fist of the NorthStar was an awesome series, it's a little disappointing that almost every martial-arts themed Action-Drama anime after it (DBZ, Yu YU Hakusho, Naruto, etc) has "borrowed" nearly part and parcel from Hokuto No Ken.

I mean, no offence to "Naruto" fans, but IMO "Naruto" is basically a DBZ knock-off with "Ninjas." Only thing missing is some magical object that grants wishes...

BTW A "naruto" (tranliterates as "Swirl-Widget" )a tiny round and thin fish-cake with a swirl imprinted on it.

I'd rather re-watch the entire "Hokuto No Ken" series, in Japanese (with or without subtitles), at least the long-running "Inu-Yasha" and "Bleach" has an pretty interesting storylines too.

But "every anime" is *not* a flashy super-powered fighters battling each other over-the-top
Action-Drama.

"Paranoia Agent" is an magnificant series. It shows how if enough people (especially paranoid people) believe something to exsist and is "willed" to exsist that whatever "It" is can manifest in some way (or more than one way) to sort of "exist" for real...
