View Full Version : Tenchu Z US Trailer! more addicting than PSO and PSU? ^_^

http://www.gametrailers.com/player.php?id=18760&type=wmv&pl=game

I reeeeeally look forward to this game! I loved some of the Tenchu games (didn't like WoH much due to some weird enemy designs, unable to sheathe weapon, unable to swim, etc. etc. as well as rFS) and Tenchu Z is gonna be the best! I have the Japanese demo on harddrive that was temporarily available last year. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

in some ways its similiar to PSO/PSU cause there's character creation, and 4 player online co-op. but of course aside from those tidbits, it's a completely different genre, naturally. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

but ya aside from paying Xbox Live Gold, there's no monthly fees to play it online. And it does involve dozens (over 50+) of mission-based objectives that take place around 12 maps that make up the different districts/areas of the Azuma clan's domain. so ya you'll revisit these locations in different situations and times of day, as well as different enemy placements and objectives. so in a way, from one point of view it feels like living the daily life of a ninja that does missions in and out of their hometown.

but ya the replay value lies in the gameplay and mastering your skills. and it's awesome it doesn't use a RPG-like level growth structure, nor restricted class-based choices. Players can bring along whatever inventory items that suits their style and specialties,
such as flash bombs, invisibility spells, shuriken, bear traps, ninja dogs, blow darts, etc.
as well as their preferred 'defensive techniques', 'offensive techniques', 'boost techniques', 'secret ninja techniques', etc. etc.

And there's even space to customize your combos. although naturally like MGS, this genre is really recommended to make use of stealth to effectively survive and eliminate your targets.
and of course you can adjust your stats in many ways (health, strength and speed). So hardcore players can set their health to 10 pts. and their strength and speed to 100 pts. if they want to test their survival skills of avoiding taking damage.
Well its hard to explain but that's the beauty of being able to edit your stats any way you like, and adjust them between missions, so besides appearance, skills and gear, manually adjusting attributes from a pool of points also makes you stand out from the rest of the ninjas out there. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

cause it leaves plenty of room to challenge oneself or make a balanced character or something without having to worry about leveling up and the whole system being just a lame matter of winning through raw endurance and strength for the most part.

And there's just sooooo many ways to eliminate enemies, as well as navigate around the maps, which feel somewhat like a 'world' to a certain extent, cause it just feels so natural, as well as the controls and responsiveness of your movements and abilities. running, jumping, ledge hanging, climbing, wall running, long somersault jumps, wall clinging, ceiling stealth, wall covering, rolling,
grappling hook usage, etc. etc. lol definitely more moves than your average tomb raider or gymnast simulator. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

and there's a wide spectrum of techniques and options based on whether your sword is sheathed and unsheathed. like when its sheathed you can grab a unsuspecting guard by surprise and there are many things you can do, like press RB which forces them to the ground, which then you can either knock them out, or break their neck. or after you grab them, use the analog stick to force them to move towards any spot you desire, knock them out, or thrust your sword through them. you can even pick up killed guards and carry them somewhere or press Y to throw them in the direction you're facing.

and these are just tiny examples of the freedom and diversity of Tenchu Z's fun! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

of course it isn't like an online RPG whete people would expect more updates/quests/maps/gear, etc. well I heard there will be DLC for extra character creation content, but an importer told my friend that character creation in the full game offers millions of possible combinations already http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

but ya I feel this is gonna be the most addicting game to me for many reasons like people can pick this game up and play it without having to worry about experience level. It's a heavily skill-based game, so it can be as simple or challenging as players want. since the stat customization is very flexible plus there are multiple difficulty settings.
And executing perfect stealth kills and stuff like that can help achieve GrandMaster rankings to unlock more missions and more stuff like accessories to decorate your created character with! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

so yes if the US gets the same demo as the Japan version, don't be fooled by the limitations of the chaarcter creation and gameplay options, in the full version there is a HUGE multitude of content and options. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

http://www.tenchu.net/senran/outline06.html

http://www.chambara.de/document/tenchusenran_skillsanditemguide.txt

http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/burger.gif

so ya, naturally like all games, it's not for everyone, but I feel maybe at least one person reading these forums may appreciate and
love Tenchu Z as their next favorite game in the world.

So ya give it a try with a open mind and accept it for what it offers and you may realize how cool and underrated it really is, cause lately casual gamers these days judge games by their graphics, but personally Tenchu Z already looks and plays great, and offers the gameplay and replay value to keep true gamers coming back for more!

And that's what true immortal games are really made of and that's why there are many legendary 8-bit and 16-bit games people still play even these days, cause the gameplay boosts the fun factor and therefore enhances the replay value. besides it already looks and plays 3 times better than the past games in the series, so if you try the full version of Tenchu Z and you end up loving it, then that's a glorious thing! And if you aren't interested in it or don't like its style, then why are you reading this? lmao.

http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_salad.gif

so ya this is just news about Tenchu Z for those interested, it's coming around June, and I'm anticipating it even more than Mass Effect and even(gasp) the PSU expansion, but ya that's just my feelings about it and what's worth more to me. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

As long as it doesn't have the old-style, excessively-clunky controls. From Software is known for those types of things.

But otherwise, it could be very interesting...

Ah, I've played the demo for this. It's been on the JP marketplace for a very long time. The name of it on was Tenchu: Senran. I'd never played a Techu game before trying the demo, so I really can't say much about how much they improved. It was definitely fun, though. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

oh don't worry, the controls are smoother and more responsive than before! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

plus someone complained of past games having ninjas that are too slow! well believe me, if you assign enough points to your speed attribute, you'll move much faster than ever before. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif plus there is a "cheetah" ability you can unlock that lets you dash super fast!

so ya there is a big difference between a 10 pts. of speed and 100 pts. of speed http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Tenchu Z is somewhat like Tomb Raider Legend in how they removed the clunkiness of the past, and made things feel and control more natural (and Tenchu Senran/Z definitely has better control, feel and camera than that game.) http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

plus the camera and camera control is 10x better than before. and the draw distance is MASSIVELY improved from the past games. especially the first games which oly let you see like 8 feet in front of you lol, anything farther than that was pitch black back then. so ya there are many improvements!

oh ya and they really deepened the enemy system with their abilities to not only see, but also hear, and smell. and the shadow system is related to whether your crouching, if your weapon is unsheathed, etc. etc. so ya that helps gauge how stealthy you are and the chances of not being visually detected.

lol I could go on but ya I'm sooooo eagerly waiting for its release! naturally you'll have to experience it and learn yourself. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

Mmm... Tenchu

I was a big fan of the first. The second one was alright but not as great as the first. The rest were below average, and I never bothered to play them.

I hope this one is as great as the original was (for its time).

oh ya! many Tenchu veterans that imported this game feel it's in fact the best stealth ninja games ever and one of the most fun co-op games ever!!!!! and having played the Japanese demo, I have a very good feeling it's true! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

this just in, some people have reported a Tenchu Z ad on the live marketplace that mentions a US demo coming soon to the marketplace! And therefore it's speculated the demo may come as soon as sometime this week or next week (sometime in May).

It will most likely be a translated version of the Japanese demo which gives you a small sample of character creation options, and one mission that contains countless ways to complete it and discover the massive amount of moves and ways to travel in, around, under and over the map's areas. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

It's true, and it's no secret... The Tenchu series can really use some work... It's been going the way of... well... Sonic Team... for quite some time now http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Saner
May 9, 2007, 10:41 PM
unpolished and generic??? oh come now. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_salad.gif

if you can stomach running through PSO/U missions over and over spamming the same attacks and techs for the most sought after drops, rares, and exp levels, Tenchu Z offers more variety and freedom in how you travel, explore and complete missions in each non-linear enviornment. There's so many moves you can do to roll, climb, leap and sneak your way around the maps instead of simply being grounded all the time.

well ya this game isn't for everyone, the difficulty isn't that high aside from avoiding detection and fighting bosses and multiple enemies head-on. and it requires patience to catch enemies off guard at the right moment and stuff like that.

and it doesnt look generic at all, in fact its because Tenchu's style stays true to the classic Japanese era with a bit of mythological twist, the most legendary style of ninja life that's more down to earth than those hack 'n slash heavy games.

The best ninjas worlds were about stealth and lean more towards those periods of time in Japan when those ninja legends were born. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

so ya you can make realistic looking ninjas or more anime-like if you change their haircolor and stuff to more wild varieties. so really the word generic does not apply to Tenchu Z cause its customization has a wide spectrum of possibilities and tastes.

oh wow so you complain about Tenchu Z looking and feeling so last-gen yet you enjoy the first Tenchu, the oldest and most technically inferior of them all, more than this???

oh well, from my point of view and experience with the demo and research of the full game and media, Tenchu Z feels like its gonna be the best Tenchu ever, to me and others who feel the same way! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

so you enjoy a game based on how they measure up with other games during their time period and capabilities of the system. that's pretty narrow-minded. if everyone had that kind of attitude, no one would be playing XBLA games or buying those classic collection packages for current consoles.

in any case Tenchu Z is made for this generation and despite its dated graphics it's still looks and feels better than the ones before it, and plays better as well. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

and you should be careful trying to flame bait around here, insulting my intelligence doesn't make you any smarter than me. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

It feels as though you can't grasp what he's saying, so I'll put it in a way you'll understand:
The new Tenchu isn't an improvement over the old Tenchus.

I don't know or care whether it's true or not, but you need to be able to understand what somebody is trying to say before attempting to act high-and-mighty.

Anyways to me having played the demo and reading up on the other things about it, Tenchu Z is an improvement over the past Tenchu games. I played them since the first one was released for PS1, so I'm aware what works and what is lacking in the series.

even Tenchu Z has its limits but overall it's much better than the other ones. It controls, feels, plays, sounds, and looks really good! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

the Tenchu Z demo is now available on marketplace. I have been browsing for a informative controls guide, so here's what I found (the controls are a bit different from the Japanese version, so the list I found have the updated list of controls the US version uses. I'm not sure if you can configure controls in the full game but it's possible)

LS= move/run/climb/swim
RS= turn camera

A = jump
B = draw/sheathe
X = grapple/attack
Y = reset camera

LB = use inventory item
RB = crouch

LT+X = block
LT+A = moonsault (long jump)
LT+RB = roll (use LS to control direction of roll)

push LS = cover against wall
push RS = first person view (+LS is for zooming)

to use grappling hook, press RS, then use RS to aim and then LB to fire when crosshair is bright red (same for shuriken and aiming-type items)

RT = strafe.
RT+side+A = sidestep
RT+forward+A = lunge
RT+back+A = backflip

grapples
-----------
X (weapon sheathed) grapple enemy
RB (while grappling) take down enemy
A (with back towards wall) slam enemy on wall
B = knock out enemy
X = stealth kill

RB+X = pick up killed body/put down body
LB = throw body

stealth kills
-------------
3 grapple SKs
(standing,
ground
and wall)

(sword unsheathed:)
front
left side
right side
behind
falling
uneven ground/object
low ledge
covering left corner of wall
covering right corner of wall
crouching

of course there may be more controls not listed, like I know with my experience with the Japanese demo that throwing a body at another body counts as a stealth kill, but ya the full game has more stealth kills and everything, but the demo is a good start to get used to the controls and feel of the gameplay. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

well I recently completed the story mode and did a little of co-op before it got late.

I must say while the story is not at the level of PSU's storytelling and character interaction, it's still quite amazing and one tragic event did make me really emotional. and the finale/climax is incredibly unexpected too!

well in any case I'm really really loving Tenchu Z! http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Wow, you already beaten the game? I got the game yesterday and played about 5 hours of it. Tenchu Z is really fun actually. I still can't see how this game can get 4.9 from gamespot. Of all the Tenchu that i play, I think this new Tenchu Z is by far the best. If i were the one grading, i would give this game a 8 out of 10. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Haven't had a chance to play yet, my little brother has been hogging the game since he got back from Gamestop :/

On the bright side, I got a new black controller, cuz I'm a rebel.

god I love this game <3 when I realized it was out I went to the store as soon as I could to buy it >.>

I've had it for a day and a half now and I've only gotten the first 4 stages done http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif I just can't help but redo a level again and again till I get ninja 5 and figure out a perfect route through the level http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

although... I don't like the fact that an arrow through someone's head doesn't kill them http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_disapprove.gif

~edit~
Also it sucks that ever since the internet guy came and changed the little internet box, my 360 can't connect to the internet anymore ;-;

Game Spot's (more like "GameSchlock") reviews are terrible to say the least. Tenchu Z (lame title IMO) *looks* pretty, the character creation seems neat, gameplay seem alot like earlier titles but with smoother controls.

The fools at GameSpot have even rated even very good games that deserve a 9.0 - 9.8 and barely gave those games a 7.0 - 8.0. Like the woefully *underrated* Odin Sphere....

I'm still not all that interested in saving up to get a 360 yet. I've got plenty of unplayed and darn good PS2 RPG's & Action RPG's etc that i've got that I've yet to play or
complete.

Hate to rain on ya'lls parade, but as mentioned earlier, its been getting pretty mediocre reviews.

Normally I'd agree that such reviews are probably unfounded, but in Japan it was getting railed on pretty hard too. Shame too, I was definitely interested. Apparently the missions are nearly identical, the locales are all the same, and theres very little enjoyment to be had all around.

At least its better than *Shudders* that EBgames exclusive Tenchu DS game...that was...horrible.

I'll stick with my PSU addiction for now. Its not that PSU is better than any other online game out there, its just that Ive always had a thing for PS's art style, and thats enough to keep me there.
